Problems with his page

edit

There are a few problems with this page.

For one, one of the sources you used calls this the battle of Maklykout, so how did you decide on the name of the page?

Secondly, what was the exact date of the battle? That should go into the infobox and lede.

Thirdly, what kind of ships were the Dutch ships? Were they Dutch warships or were they whaler ships of a private company. If the last one is true, I am not sure if the Dutch Republic should be included in the infobox and in that case the Dutch fleet can't be called a 'flottila'. @Tinkaer1991 And you should preferably only use academic sources. Not sure if these sources all fit that catogory DavidDijkgraaf (talk) 18:09, 23 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes. What is the date here? 🤷 Eastfarthingan (talk) 21:44, 23 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Firstly, the reason i decided on the battle of Jakobshavn is because that acording to my research, it is the term mostly used.
Secondly the date of this event was 1739, which is also stated in the article and referrences, yet i did mistakenly forget to include it in the infbox (which i will change right away)
Lastly i couldnt find any source directly defining the type of ship, although it seems clear that the 'fortila' was connected with the Dutch Republic and its colonial presence, given that diplomat and governor of Suriname, Jan Jacob Mauricius, wrote a book, presumeable as a response to the battle, called "Rereading Greenland's History concerning the Norwegian Eirik" Where he goes in detail to attack the Danish claim on Greenland. All in all i think its undoubtful to claim national involvance of the Dutch Republic, either on way or another Tinkaer1991 (talk) 23:06, 23 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
For a notable event in the 18th century we should be able to have an exact date. 1739 is still pretty vague.
And if we don't know what kind of ships there were I don't think we should put the Dutch Republic in the infobox. We have no evidence that these ships acted in accordance with some Dutch policy or were part of a Dutch war fleet. I have looked in de accounts of De Jonge who has a very detailed work about nearly all periods of the navy of the Dutch Republic and I couldn't find any mention of this action. I found a source stating the tortilla was made up of Dutch whalers. Although they may likely be connected with the Dutch Republic, I have not yet seen that stated in any sourced, although that might change in the future.
I also found a source for the exact date of the battle which I added. Tinkaer1991v2 (talk) 14:58, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
