Massive image galleries and style problems

edit

An unregistered editor is insisting that this article include massive image galleries and clear violations of the Wikipedia manual of style. They have reverted my edits without any attempt at discussion or even the courtesy of edit summaries.

The article has 42 images of alumni and faculty and 16 images of the campus in two large image galleries. These massive image galleries clearly violate our image use policy and common practice. The article also uses titles for people (e.g., Dr., Fr.) when our manual of style explicitly says that we shouldn't, includes people without articles in sections discussing otherwise notable people when our notability guideline says that we shouldn't, includes bold text when our manual of style says we shouldn't, and includes common nouns that are capitalized when our manual of style says that we shouldn't. Seriously, @ElKevbo; can't you give schools and their articles a break? If the images in a school article, particularly regarding alumni and faculty, are such a problem for you, then I suggest you perhaps go and remove also all the alumni and faculty images in the Harvard University article. Would be exciting to see if you could get through with that there. You are exaggerating a bit with your anti-POV crusade towards schools. Also quite interesting: you seem to be quite sensitive when someone reverts your edits (without a discussion) but you have no problem whatsoever to revert the edits of loads of other users without a discussion and with short vacuous edit summaries like "not an improvement", "unnecessary" etc. You don't own school articles and should thus not preside over them is if you were an admin, often times also placing warnings on people's user pages when they attempt to edit a school article which may present it slightly more positively. 188.62.176.75 (talk) 21:23, 4 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
The alumni gallery should certainly be removed, per prior consensus (which I'd encourage you to establish more formally on WT:HED and then document in UNIGUIDE, ElKevbo).
I'm more sympathetic to the campus gallery, since images are helpful in giving readers a sense of the campus, and they're more directly relevant to a college than alumni who only attended for a few years. 16 images is probably too many, so I'd encourage some slimming, but not being familiar with the campus I wouldn't know which ones to cut, and it's not something I'd say is worth edit warring over.
And yes, this article should certainly follow the MOS.
IP, please avoid invoking WP:OTHERSTUFF and personal attacks, and keep your arguments related to what will make this particular article better. Cheers, Sdkbtalk 04:45, 5 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
This reply appears to be a mix of WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS and WP:ADHOMINEM, which makes it look like you have no concrete response to the issues raised. The image galleries are clearly out of place, and many of the alumni and faculty have no supporting references. As there is a separate list of Bard College people article, only the very best known alumni should be listed here per WP:UNIGUIDE. The campus images should be cut down to those that reasonably illustrated the text (no more than about one a paragraph) and the alumni and faculty images should be cut down to only a few of the most famous (four or five of each), all of which should be reliably referenced. @Robminchin, @Sdkb: I did provide @ElKevbo a concrete response. But I guess, in retrospect, it requires a certain IQ and the ability to read between the lines to understand my answer. I can certainly spell it out to you as if you were five-year-olds, but don't then start wining and crying that I am patronizing you. So, to pre-chew it for you in baby words: what I was basically saying is that ElKevbo is WP:LAWYERING. He may find some policies or guidelines which may make him appear right in theory. But that he is now, in practice, just crossing a line and stretching it too far. This is why I provided the Harvard example: with a vast image gallery of alumni and faculty which has been there for years. And I reiterate: it would be indeed interesting to see if ElKevbo could achieve a removal of the same kind of images in the Harvard article too. My guess is no because the Harvard article has quite a substantial number of protecting editors. So, I guess ElKevbo or you, Sdkb or Robminchin, would be too cowardly to pull off the same thing with the Harvard article as you are doing here, with a school that may not have as many supportive and protective editors. 188.62.176.75 (talk) 07:45, 5 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
You really need to stop with the ad hominem attacks, and you need an answer that relies on WP policy and guidelines rather than WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS, which is a non-argument. There is nothing in ElKevbo's argument or history of edits on this page that appears to be trying to achieve anything other than compliance with the rules. If you have any valid reasons for your position, please state them. Robminchin (talk) 21:40, 5 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
WP:IMGCONTENT states: "The purpose of an image is to increase readers' understanding of the article's subject matter, usually by directly depicting people, things, activities, and concepts described in the article". Images of people make it easier to understand who they are. This is why IDs, passports or driver's licenses don't only have names of people but also a photo of them. There is a photo of ElKevbo on his personal website and on his employer's website, so I have a good idea of the person behind the username. For Robminchin, there is a photo in his LinkedIn profile. So, here, I also have a good idea who he is because I have a face with the name and the bio. With Sdkb, however, I have no idea who he is or what kind of person he is, no real name, no photo, nothing. I haven't got the vaguest idea about the person behind the username.

It's obvious you don't actually have any justification for keeping the large image galleries, so I'm going to remove them. Robminchin (talk) 00:28, 6 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
