Anvil is Jewish
editIn the movie "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" at 34:12 they show video footage from Steve Kudlow's Bar Mitzvah from 1969. Therefore Steve is Jewish. At 35:37 in the same movie, Robb Reiner says his father is a hungarian Jew. Kudlow and Reiner are the founding band members and the only permanent members. Others have passed by, but these two guys have always been Anvil. Is this interesting fact for the fans, shouldn't it be added to the wikipedia article on Anvil? Also, they met through Marty Hoffman, which is a Jewish name.

is this a real band?
editWell I was skeptical but they're on billboard.com with their "Strength of Steel" album at 191 on July 25th 1987: http://www.billboard.com/album/anvil/strength-of-steel/1641
I can't believe this is even a question. Of course, they're real, they are in the newspapers, on the radio, the documentary was made by a former roadie, major metal bands cite them as an influence... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.183.70.15 (talk) 08:14, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
It would be easy to prove one way or the other, just check the supposed chart hits for the band when they were doing as good as they ever did. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.154.226.13 (talk) 13:04, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
Mark Kermode in a review of the film, expressed doubts as to whether this is an actual band. Certainly, this article does little tob quell the doubts]]--Macca7174talk 01:28, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

- Okay now I guess I think it's reasonable to accept that they ARE real, unless Amazon is in on the gag too: http://www.amazon.com/Anvil/e/B000AQ2J0I/ref=ntt_mus_gen_pel "In the early '80s, the Canadian heavy metal band Anvil made an impact on the developing speed metal scene. Their first three albums featured some mind-boggling technically advanced metal at a previously unheard-of speed -- sound for the sake of sound, not songs. After releasing their third album in 1983, the band sank into a mire of legal and creative problems where their accomplishments and popularity were eclipsed by the bands that defined speed and thrash metal -- Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeth -- among other lesser-knowns who were all in debt to Anvil's previous work. Probably about as 'real' as Spinal Tap —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.74.102.107 (talk) 16:25, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
dude! the drummer name is [Rob Reiner] hello!!!! the director of spinal tap

There's a June 12, 1982 article in the Fredricksburg Free Lance-Star newspaper archived in Google News:
"The heavy metal band Anvil's latest LP is "Metal on Metal". The rockers, who are known for taking their pet tarantulas on tour, didn't bring their favorite animals into the studio. "Usually the music doesn't affect them, but the volume was so high in the studio the one day we did take them that the tarantulas were having traumatic experiences in their cages," lead singer "Lips" was quoted as saying."
Hilarious. But also probably acceptable proof that this band did exist in the 80s. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.193.128.210 (talk) 05:11, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
- Is this supposed to be some sort of talk page troll joke post? Its roped in several other trolls already. Anvil were a hugely popular band in the early 1980s. A person would have had to have been born under a rock not to know who they are. Or simply not very well educated in the history of heavy metal. Aussie Ausborn (talk) 10:46, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Holy shit, the ignorance of people here. Fine if you didn't know of their existence prior to the film but to have a discussion about whether they're a real band or not is Ludacris. They have been together since the late 70s and had pretty moderate success in the 80s. Walk into any music shop, i'm sure at least one of their albums will be there. I hope to fuck these are all jokes posts and I just don't 'get it'.
--Now what does Luda have to do with all of this??? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.10.76.49 (talk) 05:37, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
Billboard lists their album "strength of steel" as 191 on the July 25 1987 charts: http://www.billboard.com/#/album/anvil/strength-of-steel/1641 So unless someone paid a lot of money to get a fake billboard chart position, I'd say Anvil is a real band. However, is that Anvil honestly the one in the movie? Maybe. is the story dramatized for comic effect? Without a doubt.209.154.226.13 (talk) 14:35, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
- It's not a fictional film, it's a doco, real. Sure there's drama, but in the end it's a film, for entertainment. I think the misinformed allegations can cease now. k.i.a.c (talktome - contribs) 06:45, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
Re: "--Now what does Luda have to do with all of this???":
I suspect the unsigned epithet-spewing contributor meant ludicrous. I have no idea why he capitalized it, perhaps for emphasis. In any case, if their best-selling record over a thirty-year period charted at a mere #191 and all their records were either vanity releases or released by obscure labels, it's hard for me to believe they could have been as influential as alleged, and I'd say the idea that everyone ought to have heard of them is the truly ludicrous notion. I agree that the putative name Robb Reiner is highly suspicious, and I think the article needs to tell whether it's this character's birth name and legal name and if not when and under what circumstances he adopted it. Note that the documentary was directed by someone intimitely associated with the group. I'd like to see some independent corroboration of its contents. TheScotch (talk) 11:38, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
- How about instead of making accusations and assumptions, you go and find some kind of source that actually has the same opinion as you? Because that's all it is at the moment, an opinion. Speculation. This is bordering a forum discussion, and has no weight of bearing on the article, so go find something legit or else this is just pointless. k.i.a.c (talktome - contribs) 02:25, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
Hey, I'm new here, and I do not know if I am replying to the Talk Page in the correct way. Yes, Anvil is a real band. My family is close friends with Ian Dickson. (One of the original people who started the band) If anyone would know that they are real, it would be me. :) @Redsquare11: Then you saw Ian Dickson at the concert in New York. He was the bass player. I'll make an article about Ian Dickson, if there isn't one already. :) (Maybe) ((If someone could please move my comment to make it look like a reply please, I do not know how)) Wiiplay ds (talk) 03:20, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
- I don't believe Dickson would pass Wikipedia's notability guidelines, it would get removed pretty quickly. You're welcome to add sourced information to this page though. k.i.a.c (talktome - contribs) 12:47, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
Re: "How about instead of making accusations and assumptions, you go and find some kind of source that actually has the same opinion as you?":
How about you ("k.i.a.c") look up civility in a dictionary? I have made no accusations or assumptions, and I have made clear suggestions for the article. (I just came upon a book called The Rough Guide to Heavy Metal, published in 2005, by the way. It's more or less an encyclopedia of heavy metal groups listed in alphabetical order. "Arch Enemy" comes directly after "Anthrax".)
- So they're not in a book, they must not exist? You're just speculating, digging for something that is just not there. I'm 100% sure if your claims had any truth behind them then there would be plenty of sources making the same assumptions. But you can't even provide one? And i apologise if I seem uncivil, it was not my intention. k.i.a.c (talktome - contribs) 01:54, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
- If the naysayer really wants, I'll post a photo of the T-shaped shirt I got at Monsters Of Rock in 1982, with the word "Anvil" writ fairly small thereupon - they were the opening act and, as I recall, not very well received. Mr Larrington (talk) 11:29, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- I think, at this time, the point is moot. If anything it's interesting that with so many musical hoaxes have been performed over the years, from Spinal Tap to Chris Gaines, that people automatically assumed Anvil were a fictional band. With Anvil having so many humourous lyrics, and such a bizarre story, you can see why the lay metal fan would make that mistake. Frehley72 (talk) 13:09, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
The whole point of the film is that they never got the recognition they deserved, and you're (presumably TheScotch?) surprised they don't appear in a book? At any rate, i hardly think there is any relevance to discussing how "real" they are, or were, since it's fairly clearly established that they in fact were, and are, an actual band. ~transmothra (talk) 23:37, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
I just read Riff Kills Man by Martin Popoff. Great book. He reviews pretty much every Anvil album up to press date of 1993. His later books cover the entire Anvil discography. So what if they're not in the Rough Guide, which is a pretty weak book in my view. Frehley72 (talk) 19:26, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Oh dearie, dearie me. Some of us can actually remember listening to Tommy Vance play Anvil on the Friday Rock Show. (Shakes head sadly). Stub Mandrel (talk) 15:47, 30 December 2014 (UTC)
Album Names
editThey're very fond of their alliterative album titles... True old-school metal! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.41.229.134 (talk) 03:03, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
Power metal
editAs cited in genre in their individual albums power metal appears as many times as thrash metal does so i think it would be fair since we already have thrash metal in the genre box to add power metal as well — Preceding unsigned comment added by Paokaraforlife (talk • contribs) 23:24, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
