Salary context discussion

edit

I'm not sure why Caprio's salary comparison with a notable industry peer is causing an issue. Caprio's salary is exceptional, and it would seem important to give the figure context to others within the same exact market (that market being "Presidents of High Ed Instutions"). It is similar to saying that the Camry is the most frequently stolen car - but "forgetting" the context that the Camry is the most popular car on the road.

Similarly, without context, Caprio's salary is merely data. The reader now does not know if Caprio's roughly $800,000 compensation was high or low given his institutional responsibilities and the norms of salary within higher ed. The reader will have to do independent research to discover the meaning of the data point. As an encyclopedic article, it is important to explain the meaning of the data, by providing a context that the reader can easily comprehend. Throwing data at the reader without context leaves a void in the article, and therefore a void in the reader's understanding.

Clearly, Caprio's notable compensation package belongs in the article. It is therefore surprising that it doesn't merit a descriptive context to further enlighten the reader. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.115.24.160 (talk) 12:51, 1 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I agree. It seems unrealistic to use a salary figure without some kind of qualification so that readers can understand it. Since the figure is very high on the list (at least according to the reference), it merits mention. Since it is an "employment market" that most readers are not familiar with, it makes sense to clarify it with clear examples or comparisons. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.19.215.198 (talk) 02:32, 12 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

This is a private matter between the College and the President. The College is a private institution. It is inappropriate to badmouth something you don't know or understand. I vote to keep the salary out of the article, because it doesn't help people understand Caprio - it just makes them dislike him. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.174.241.41 (talk) 02:19, 26 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I did quick survey of other entries for college presidents (many at much larger institutions) at other schools. The majority of those entries did not even list salary information, let alone compare it another president at another university. Bpayne4001 (talk) 13:05, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Bpayne4001Reply
