Use in deodorants

edit

A deodorant appears to be using oak marble gall extract; any idea what property allows it to be used for this purpose? Badagnani (talk) 02:13, 15 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Gall forming insects

edit

This section appears in each of (at least) the following articles: Cola-nut gall; Eriophyes tiliae tiliae; Knopper gall; Oak artichoke gall; Pineapple gall; Red-pea gall; and Rose bedeguar gall. I suggest it be removed and merged if necessary into Gall. Heds (talk) 03:33, 3 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Oak apple and Andricus kollari

edit

Friends, Are they same or not ? محمدعلی بختیاری (talk) 07:34, 15 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

- No, although galls of Andricus kollari are often referred to nowadays as Oak Apples, this properly applies to the sexual generation of Biorhiza pallida. Semudobia (talk) 19:27, 2 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

General Structure

edit

This article suffers by focussing on one of the galls caused by the organism, rather than the organism itself. The introductory material should describe it as a cynipid gall wasp with alternating agamic and sexual generations. If possible the insect itself should be described, followed by things like host plant specificity, distribution (e.g., from Fauna Europea) and phenology should then be described. A section on ecology (including parasites/parasitoids/predators) might also be useful.

The Marble Gall, its use in ink making, introduction to the UK etc. should then be a separate section. An attempt should be made to describe the sexual galls on Turkey Oak. Possibly the non-biological aspects should be separated out as well: there is a common convention in many modern biological reference works to have a section relating to Relationship to Man covering cultural, economic and conservation issues.

Basically I suggest a reorganisation of material to focus on the organism, not one of its byproducts. When time permits I'll try and sandbox something along these lines. Semudobia (talk) 19:50, 2 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

It's not just this article, but all the other galls in the See also section, and perhaps even more in their see alsos. 8ty3hree (talk) 21:48, 3 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
