Anastomosis in Fungal Genetics refers to the union of a hypha from a fungus with a hypha from another compatible fungus from the same species, resulting the intercommunication of their genetic material. This process can result in exchange of genetic material, exchange in a non-generative, hence vegetative manner. Many fungi show anastomosis although typically fungi within a species can be classified within vegetative compatibility groups or VCGs. Fungi from within the same VCG can form reciprocal anastomosis, similar as generative genetic transfer in homothallic fungi. However, within a fungal species, typically more than two VCGs exists, some of which can form reciprocal anastomosis and of some of which are incompatible.

Etymology

Etymology would be nice. I'd do it myself, but I don't know thing one about Classics, really. I've got some rough idea that it means "subtracting mouths" (which sort of makes sense), but that's hardly encyclopedia-worthy. Any Greek scholars willing to take? Kajerm 03:28, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Medicine

The opening line states that anastomosis is a surgical connection, and then next line it is stated that there are many natural anastomoses. Perhaps the opening line should be modified?

I agree. This portion is incorrect. Portacaval anastomoses are also naturally occurring and usually not pathological. If I get some time I'll change this, but any other input would be appreciated! --Ibrmrn 23:07, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Illustrations needed

Biology

Somebody removed a part of the biology section with no note. Misleading or unfortunate on evolution

"In evolution, anastomosis is a recombination of evolutionary lineage. Conventional accounts of evolutionary lineage present themselves as the simple branching out of species into novel forms. Under anastomosis, species might recombine after initial branching out, such as in the case of recent research which shows that ancestral populations along human and chimpanzee lineages may have interbred after an initial branching event."

Use in architecture

The last sentence of the lead section claims that the term anamastosis is used in architecture. However, I've been able to find only figurative uses of the term in that field, naming architectural projects rather than - which would seem apposite - spaces that connect other spaces. For every other field mentioned in the same sentence, the article has a subsection giving further details, but not for architecture.
