Deleted mention of "fellowships" on ACS page
editIn the U.S., being a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons has nothing to do with fellowships. They are totally different concepts - perhaps in other countries it's different. A fellowship is advanced training one pursues after completion of basic residency in order to specialize in a sub-area of a medical field, and yes, people in these programs are called "fellows," but that has nothing to do with being a Fellow of the ACS. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cdelalio (talk • contribs) 14:14, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Commission on Cancer
editACS says that it established the Commission on Cancer in 1922. Presumably this organization has some history because it is still influential today, but I think no history is available online. I added a section to this article and am redirecting Commission on Cancer to that section. I looked into this because I am sharing information published by this organization elsewhere on Wikipedia. If anyone finds any published proof that this organization is notable then please share. Blue Rasberry (talk) 13:40, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
Adding To The Overall Page of American College of Surgeons
editIn looking at this page, it appears that a number of different sections that the American College of Surgeons is working on have not been added. It would seem to me that it might be important to further expand the page considering the tremendous impact and reach it has on the delivery of surgical care to the American Public and even internationally. Does anyone else think this is a good idea !?Globalsurgeon (talk) 18:49, 24 November 2014 (UTC)
Color Bar
editIn 2009 I added a mention of the first black doctor to become a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Louis Tompkins Wright (1891 - 1952), with a link to a Time Magazine article of 1934 which pointed out that the American College of Physicians remained all-white. By the end of 1950 there were only 38 black FACSs, so the gates had not been thrown wide open. This item was later removed. NRPanikker (talk) 00:24, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
Founder is incorrect
editHello, it appears the founder of the ACS is listed incorrectly as Frederic Atwood Besley, for which an ACS page is cited (https://www.facs.org/about-acs/archives/pasthighlights/besleyhighlight) in the caption of the image in the first section. Nowhere on the cited page is Besley acknowledged as the founder (he was President more than twenty years after its founding, in fact, in 1937).
I looked up other sources and found on the ACS website that the founder is actually Franklin Martin MD, FACS (https://www.facs.org/about-acs/archives/acshistory).
I'm fairly new on Wikipedia and this is the first time I've discovered something like this so I'm not really sure of the protocol - do we (1) remove the image and incorrect caption, or (2) leave it and change the caption to just say he was president between 1937 and 1938? I'll defer to someone who knows a bit more here!!
Thanks!

Membership count
editThe ACS membership count has increased to 84,000. It's mentioned under About the American College of Surgeons at the end of this press release I found recently. It's also near the bottom of their main page and at the beginning of their Membership Benefits page. All of these are fine according to WP:Verifiability#Self-published or questionable sources as sources on themselves (policy, shortcut WP:ABOUTSELF), but none is great. I'm leaning toward Membership Benefits because it's the most specifically relevant. Flatscan (talk) 05:29, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

Infobox mission parameter
editWhen I was updating the membership count, I noticed a preview warning that the mission
parameter in the infobox was unknown. It was removed back in 2018: Template talk:Infobox organization/Archive 2#Mission, slogan. There have been similar discussions about motto
, including Template talk:Infobox organization#For "motto" what use instead? (July–September 2022), with no consensus to restore the parameters. Flatscan (talk) 05:33, 20 February 2023 (UTC)

Added links
editI added a few links to this article, mainly in the infobox, with a few in the Lead and Leadership sections. As it's a short article, and I could not find more appropriate links to add, I've gone ahead and removed the underlinked
template.
