Chief Mechanical Engineer
editAllan was never CME of the Highland... or indeed of any railway. He was Locomotive Superintendent of the Scottish Central Railway, and whilst there acted as consultant to his nephew William Barclay, who was Locomotive Superintendent of the Inverness & Nairn Railway (1855-65) and simultaneously of the Inverness & Aberdeen Junction Railway. These two lines amalgamated in 1861, and they amalgamated with others later on, the combined concern taking the name Highland Railway from 29 June 1865. One week later (5 July 1865), the SCR became part of the Caledonian. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:37, 27 September 2010 (UTC)
