Bleach
editI am told that you can not use Bleach to wash your white when you have an Aerobic System....if this is true....How do I clean whites?
- Depending on the source, some say don't use bleach (OxyClean is a recommended replacement, or other non-chlorine bleach), others say use it in moderation; one owner's manual says use it only when needed, and at half the concentration listed on the container[1]. Check your owner's manual and see what it says; if you don't have one, then I'd recommend using the half-concentration bleach only when needed, and keep an eye on your system. If the environment in the tank is seriously damaged, then the system will start to back up. It's not really all that different from a traditional septic system in these ways, both rely on a healthy internal ecosystem to function. scot 16:30, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
Effluent characteristics
editShould the external sprinkler emissions of cleaned water, have a bad odor,if correct chemicals are used? How toxic is the output of a sprinkler system? If you can smell odor, does it mean you are breathing toxins? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.20.214.222 (talk) 16:44, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
- First I'll address the technical aspects. The output from a correctly working ATS should be effectively sterile, and contain nothing "toxic" (keep in mind that the definition of "toxic" varies with context). According to this site, "A properly operating ATU should produce high-quality effluent with less than 30 mg/liter BOD (biochemical oxygen demand, a measure of the organic matter), 25 mg/liter TSS (total suspended solids), and 10,000 cfu/mL fecal coliform bacteria, an indicator of pathogens and viruses." It goes on to note, "Pressure distribution (rather than gravity) to the soil system is necessary, since the effluent from ATUs contains very little organic matter. The effluent is so "clean," a biomat layer does not form the way it does in a soil treatment system receiving effluent from septic tanks." As long as the discharge has time to filter through soil, where bacteria and plants can absorb the nitrogen, phosphorous, and remaining organic matter, the output can then be allowed into groundwater or surface water. Now, this does assume "correctly working", which means that it is kept supplied with chlorine to sterilize the effluent, and that nothing that the system cannot digest goes into it. From this site comes a list of things NOT to do to the ATS; these include chemicals and drugs can kill off the ecosystem in the ATS, keeping it from digesting the wastes, and other items are not digestible and will build up and reduce system capacity.
- Second, the issue of odor. Based on personal experience with a system, there is a very faint odor to the effluent, but it's only noticeable when you're near the sprinklers when they're running. During one poorly timed repair of a sprinkler head that had been broken loose by the lawnmower, I ended up getting sprayed with effluent. I've been in plenty of lakes, including ones from which drinking water was pulled, that had much dirtier water than that. Granted, I still went and took a shower, but that's mainly because I knew what that water had been less than 48 hours ago... scot (talk) 15:17, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
- Found a good reference for odor issues; this site discusses aerobic treatment as a means to reduce the odor from pig farms. Having lived in a town with an ag school for many years, I can tell you that there are few odors quite as potent as that of a pig farm in the summer. If aerobic treatment is the best option there, then it's certainly as good as you can expect for a residential waste treatment system. scot (talk) 15:22, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
