Hello
Hello Nightstallion, A rather good item about the two euro commemorative coins.
- I like very much the présentation of the table with the 2 euro's photos. The size of the coins seems to be optimal (we should try to have real scans of the coins)
- I should have prefer a shorter introduction about the €2 commemorative coins.
- Then a first paragraph more official with a reference to the Official Journal of the European Union with the item 2003/C 247/03 Communication from the Commission on the recommendation of 29 September 2003 concerning a common practice for changes to the design of national obverse sides of euro circulation coins
- direct link to http://europa.eu/eur-lex/pri/en/oj/dat/2003/c_247/c_24720031015en00050006.pdf
- in that part you can make a summary (like the one you have done)
- For each coin in the table, just ad the reference to the OJ
- exemple : for the first one (the 2 euro Greek) : 2004/C 91/06 New national side of euro circulation coins with the link : http://europa.eu/eur-lex/pri/en/oj/dat/2004/c_091/c_09120040415en00050005.pdf
- Just have a look to the frenck Wiki : http://fr.wiki.x.io/wiki/Euro_%28pi%C3%A8ces_comm%C3%A9moratives_de_2_euros%29
Regards. Marc --Flafla89 19:04, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
- I tried to implement all of your changes... Good? (Trying to make this a feature article out of nowhere, so I need all the feedback I can get. ;)) —Nightstallion (?) 17:53, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you for having implemented these propositions. It seems rather good.
- I 've added some light changes :
- a first paragraph just to make the intro shorter.
- About the coins, it should be better to have the titles at every picture : Image Country - Design - Volume - Date - Reference.
- I propose to add the engraver's name. Marc--Flafla89 16:02, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks! As I've said, trying to make this my first self-written featured article. ;)
- The intro is better now; I had considered the same notion, but couldn't agree with myself on either a title or on where to cut the first paragraph in half. Thanks!
- I personally think that it's good the way it is, we needn't give the columns for every coin (especially since it's rather clear what each column contains from context); I wouldn't be against including the engraver and/or designer, if we can find out who they are for all of them.
- Thanks for your input! I'll add the remaining four coins and information on upcoming issues in the next (few) day(s). —Nightstallion (?) 07:02, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
Motif
Everything looks good. To me tho, motif describes an ongoing theme throughout a set. I would use design, or such. But since this is the euro, maybe motif is a more european definition. The name...Euro commemorative coins(2E)or(E2)(the E is euro symbol, just didn't want to look up how to do it :) or E2 commemorative coins. Other than that, it's nice. :) Joe I 00:38, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
- Mh, okay, I'll use design, then. I'll move it to €2 commemorative coins, yeah. —Nightstallion (?) 17:53, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
Great page. Maybe under volume you could change "mio" because that doesn't realy look like "million" if that's what it's supposed to be. Otherwise everything is to my liking. – Zntrip 02:22, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
- Oh? "Mio." isn't the usual abbreviation for million in English (it is in German)? Oops. ^_^; Should I just use "million" or is there some other common abbreviation? Thanks for the laudatio. ;) —Nightstallion (?) 05:36, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
Bravo !
Felicitation Nightstallion ! I really appreciate that item on 2 euros commemorative coins. It is one of the best I have ever seen on the net. Marc --Flafla89 19:07, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks! On that note, I'll move to the final title and nominate for featured-ness. ;) —Nightstallion (?) 19:10, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
Cool article. Always curious bout other nation's currency. --Madchester 03:05, 26 January 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks! —Nightstallion (?) 07:39, 26 January 2006 (UTC)
Excellent article! Thanks for taking the time to explain what's being pictured on each of the coins. Congratulations as well on gaining FA status. --Dmleach 13:28, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks! —Nightstallion (?) 13:56, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
€2 euro coin?
The introductory paragraph contains the text "€2 euro coin". Isn't that redundant? Shouldn't it be either "€2 coin" or "2 euro coin"? Markkawika 08:18, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
- You're correct, of course. Changed. —Nightstallion (?) 08:50, 11 January 2006 (UTC)
Order
Do you think that the list of the coins should be by the day they came out? – Zntrip 18:24, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
- I personally prefer listing them by issuing countries. Of course, I don't WP:OWN this article, so if others agree... ;) —Nightstallion (?) 20:59, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
Well... I guess nobody has anything to say... – Zntrip 01:57, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
- shrugs Shall we leave it as is for now, then? —Nightstallion (?) 08:14, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
- In my opinion, it is better to keep the date of issue. Marc --Flafla89 15:25, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
- Year-by-year basis is better, since there would be less headers than having one for each country that has released a coin. --Madchester 01:00, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
To clarify: The discussion is not whether to have sections for years or for countries, but whether to sort them by issue date or by country in the year sections. —Nightstallion (?) 06:52, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
Plural name?
Why is this at €2 commemorative coins instead of €2 commemorative coin per naming conventions? Is it because there are multiple different kinds of them? I must assume there's some reason for this to have gotten by all the FA reviewers. Deco 02:26, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Actually... I don't have an elaborate reason for it, I just went by precedent (euro coins) and because it sounded "right", while the singular form didn't. —Nightstallion (?) 06:52, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- I'm in the singular camp, which sounds more "right" to me. Declare 09:42, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- yeah, I would have thought per convention a renaming to the singular is in order. └ UkPaolo/talk┐ 13:26, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
Mh. Well, we can, of course, move it, but then euro coins would also have to be moved. I think we should wait with this until it's not FAotD any longer, shouldn't we? —Nightstallion (?) 13:57, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Using the name "€2 commemorative coin" would imply that there is only one kind of coin. But this page describes all the diffrent €2 commemorative coins, so the plural name makes much more sense to me. --Boivie 14:19, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, perhaps you're right... I'm not sure to be honest, doesn't really matter. I certainly wouldn't think about moving it whilst it's on the front page, Nightstallion! └ UkPaolo/talk┐ 14:41, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- It doesn't hold this implication for me, and then there's the matter of basic convention (+ "coin" can also work as a mass noun). Declare 03:52, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
Obscenity in the coin
Today's featured picture features an interesting osbcenity. While I was the one that uploaded it, I did create it at the request of another user who uploaded a newspaper clip of the same thing. —This user has left wikipedia 05:04 2006-01-27
- Wouldn't that be "controversy over lack of Norway"? ;) Besides, that'll be changed on 1 January 2007. —Nightstallion (?) 06:52, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Whats happening on the 1 January 2007? Norway isn't joining, is it? Seabhcán 11:48, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- No. (Not yet, anyway. Discussion on that to be re-opened after the next Norwegian legislative elections in 2009.) What will happen is that the common reverse side will change to include all of Europe, not just the EU member states (currently, only the EU-15 are depicted; to avoid having to change the common side every three years as the Balkans –and possibly other countries– join the EU, they opted for this change; cf. euro coins). —Nightstallion (?) 12:08, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Ah, much better. It was silly only to show EU members on coins, while showing everyone on the notes. What about Iceland, Greenland and Turkey? And how will they fit in cyprus, for that matter? Ireland's going to look very small! Seabhcán 12:42, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Cf. the image on the page I linked to; neither of the four you mentioned is on it, I'm afraid. I doubt they'll change that when Iceland or Turkey join, though. —Nightstallion (?) 12:45, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
Quotas & Minting
I was looking at this article and some of the linked ones and got to wondering how it is determined how many coins each country can make and possible issues that may exist when different countries mint the same curreny, but I didn't find it. I imagine this information must be covered somewhere, and I think it would be useful to some how link the articles.--Paraphelion 10:19, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Every year, the European Union edit in the Official Journal of the European Union how many coins each country of the Eurozone is allowed to mint. I should find back the article reference during next week end. ;-). Marc --Flafla89 10:40, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks! Just to be clear, I meant linking to other wiki articles, but of course external articles could be useful too. The featured article is what made me aware that the Euro wasn't minted by some central agency, and seems like a natural thing to wonder after reading the article.--Paraphelion 11:00, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
Main page FA already?
This article was only nominated for FA status 17 days ago. Surely putting it as the main page FA was rather premature?
I'm not especially criticising the article itself (and obviously I'm content to have subject matter from my area feature on the main page), but it does surely suggest lax standards in the choosing of articles for the main page.

Can't see symbol before number 2...
Already mentioned on the main page, too: Firefox 1.0.4 on Mac OSX can't see the "eurosymbol" in this article. Strangely enough, it DOES appear in the title bar for the page! I get Editing Talk:(Eurosymbol)2 ... on the title bar at the top of the brower, but (space)2... in the article itself.
- I suggest getting 1.5 then. =] —Nightstallion (?) 13:55, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Same deal with 1.5. Some sort of Mac thing? This is my office computer -- I'm not much of a Mac maven. MattShepherd 15:26, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- It's a Unicode symbol. Do you need different font as your browser default? --Red King 00:11, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
- Works fine on my Mac, so I s'pose it's a font issue. —Nightstallion (?) 23:22, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

Directions
The heads of e.g. Henri, GD of Luxembourg are described as facing left, but are turned toward the right of the image. Is there some terminological convention in numismatics that is being used? If so, perhaps a note to explain this, or a link to a more general explanatory article on numismatic terms, would be useful. --80.69.0.186 14:44, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, it works the same way as on flags and coats of arms. —Nightstallion (?) 23:22, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
Wales?
I haven't seen one of these coins "for real", but from the image it looks as though the map contains the same omission that appeared in another EU-published map - i.e. they've left Wales off the UK! Can anyone confirm this from a real coin? Jon Rob 14:46, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- The common side of these coins is the same as for ordinary 2 euro coins. A new common side will be introduced in 2007, see Euro coins#Design changes --Boivie 14:57, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
Protected!
It is a real shame for Wikipedia to make an article featured, for everyone to read, and then protect it. What a slap in the face of Wikipedia's goals and reputation.
- When there was as much vandalism as there was it was necessary. The vandalism was a slap in the face of Wikipedia's goals and reputation. joturner 00:14, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
- Absolutely approve. There was a concerted group attack to destroy the article with random pictures and junk. It wasn't even an opposing point of view, but just at the level of kicking in a public telephone box. Letting it go on would destroy Wiki's credibility too. If anyone has some relevant text to add or change, they can put it here. --Red King 00:33, 28 January 2006 (UTC) (not an admin)
Good choice, but it was to be expected of such a controversial issue like commemorative coinage.--Paraphelion 00:42, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

Error?
Description: On the left side of the centre part of the coin, the effigy of Grand Duke Henri is depicted (looking to the left)
Isn't he looking to the right, not the left? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dblandford (talk • contribs) . 29 January 2006, 22:11 (UTC)
- We've had that question before. Incidentally, can someone come up with an article link to let all these people wondering about this know that with flags, coats of arms, stamps, coins, and so on, left is right and right is left? —Nightstallion (?) 22:11, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
Well, we should correct the orientations on practically all coin descriptions in the page, then. I can do that, if you like.--Iago4096 05:27, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
- Why? It's currently correct, isn't it? —Nightstallion (?) Seen this already? 15:27, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
I'm afraid, you did get me confused in the end... So which way is correct? People on the coin looking left are looking at their left, right? But everything else on the right side of the coin is on our right side as we look at the coin? So it is not as it is with coats of arms? Please explain...--Iago4096 17:43, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
It is as with coats of arms; everything on the "left" of the coin is on "their" left. Hope I've explained it now... ^_^; Sorry for the confusion! —Nightstallion (?) Seen this already? 08:58, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
- Well, then have a good look at the pictures and the descriptions. Finland 2004 the right side of the pillar, Greece 2004 to the left is the logo of the Olympic Games, to the right is the denomination, Italy 2004 Globe tilted to the right, RI to the right of the globe, mint mark upper left of the globe, Luxembourg 2004 on the left...effigy, the right displays his monogram, twelve stars also on the right, San Marino 2004 SAN MARINO to the right of the bust... and so on. Practically all the descriptions should be changed, right? Just say the word and I'll do it.--Iago4096 16:53, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
- It seems you're right... Never noticed that. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, I'd agree with the changes. —Nightstallion (?) Seen this already? 10:26, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
- Gnah! After wandering around for a while in Wikipedia:WikiProject Numismatics/Style, and staring at a coin crosseyed, the only conclusions i can concieve is they were discussing the metal stamp that rams the design into the coins, hence everything is backwards? Or, more likely but less geeky invention, it's from standing behind ones own shield, heraldratically speaking... If that's not it, i and this thread would love to know what is :) -Quiddity 02:11, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
- Well, yes. I am afraid it is heraldry all over again. It makes some sense, if you think of portraits of people on the coins looking at their left, walking to their right or having things done to their left arm or right leg. Think of ot anatomically, if it makes you happy. Ask any physician. A patients left arm is always his left arm, no matter how many people look at it from whichever direction.--Iago4096 04:57, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
2€ Belgium 2005
I have the coin Belgium-Luxembourg Economic Union described in your article and I could upload a picture of the coin. I prefer using pictures of the the actual coins, especially since the picture featured on the page is slightly incorrect regarding the mint symbols at the bottom. My coin is circulated, though. Should I upload it?--Iago4096 05:27, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, please do so -- on the commons, though, of course. —Nightstallion (?) Seen this already? 15:27, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

2€ Treaties of Rome 2007
First of all, this page is great. Keep up the good work. A couple of days ago a proposal was made for the joined 2007 2 euro coin. Perhaps it's worth mentioning? There's a picture of it at : http://www.minfin.nl/nl/actueel/nieuwsberichten,2006/07/Europa-doet-voorstel-herdenkingsmunt.html Perhaps you find it worth mentioning. BenCastricum 18:04, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
- It's already mentioned in the article; I've preferred only to include picture if the coin has already been released, at least up to now, though we could change that, of course... —Nightstallion (?) 05:47, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
Sort by date
The list would be more interesting if it was sorted by date of issuing. It's already sorted by year, so why not completing the chronology of the list rather than listing by the name of the country? CG 14:51, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- The problem with that is that one date is not completely clear... If you can give me a source for a date for Finland's 2004 coin, I wouldn't be against rearranging them. ;) —Nightstallion (?) 05:48, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- It's chronologically listed in the official site. Look at 2004. The only problem is between Luxembourg (23 June) and Finland (June/July). Reversal of sides in Germany 2006 Holstentor coin
I made an edit awhile back that reversed the directions (left and right) on the Holstentor coin. Please clearly read the text on the cited page (http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/site/en/oj/2006/c_033/c_03320060209en00050005.pdf), it says the HH (designers initials) are on the right side.

Comment
Mh. I'd personally really prefer to leave the info out of the table until the Official Journal of the European Union actually mentions the coin, but I do realise that this would mean that we'd be out-of-date for a little while longer (don't ask me why they take so long this time, though). —Nightstallion (?) 12:18, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
Magdeburg Cathedral
Nightstallion I don't understand why you have a problem with the name Magdeburg Cathedral...?? "Cathedral of Magdeburg" may very well be the title of an image or even an article.. BUT that still doesn't make it correct usage.
As an example: we don't use "Abbey of Westminster" or "Cathedral of Durham" as the names of the those places. I'm afraid you are confusing "of" with the German usage of "von", so I have once again changed the reference in the article. By the way, in the same article the Kölner Dom is noted as "Cologne Cathedral" and not "Cathedral of Cologne" ... shame really as it might have smelt quite nice :-)--IsarSteve 20:23, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- You know, it's really quite simple. If the correct idiomatic name in English is "Magdeburg Cathedral", then the article should be at that location. If it's at Cathedral of Magdeburg, then you are either wrong, or the article should be moved, I don't care which. And please, be so kind not to lecture me on English, I reckon my English is no worse than yours. —Nightstallion (?) 15:55, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
- it's really not worth the bother of replying..BUT If you want to make the article and yourself look childish, then carry on using "Cathedral of Magdeburg". My last word on the subject. As I previously mentioned, if this whole thing is just made up by me, why then isn't Cologne Cathedral called Cathedral of Cologne. --IsarSteve 21:31, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
- You're not really listening, are you? My point is, if you're right, then Cathedral of Magdeburg is not at its correct location and should be moved to Magdeburg Cathedral; I ventured that you should be the one to do this, as you claim that this is the more idiomatic form. That's all I was saying. —Nightstallion (?) 14:41, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
- Of course I'm listening and if you checked out talk:Cathedral of Magdeburg then you would see that I've taken steps to change the situation!! --IsarSteve 14:59, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
- I just saw that recently; sorry for doing you wrong, it's okay then, we'll discuss this there. :) —Nightstallion (?) 13:35, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

Article update
Upon the suggestion of Nightstallion, I have updated the release dates for many of the coins. Also, there is now some new information regarding the German commemorative coins in the Bundeländer Series for 2008 and 2009.
There is a question about three release dates which I have brought to Nightstallion's attention on his talk page.
Belgium Treaty of Rome Inscription
The original entry was this: PACTVM ROMANVM QVINQVAGENARIVM, EUROPEA, BELGIQUE–BELGIE–BELGIEN
It was changed to this:
The image in nature and scope disrupts the conventions of the article, so I changed it to this: PACTVM ROMANVM QVINQVAGENARIVM, EUROPÆ
I think this is more to the original intent and 'spirit' of the design inscription.
If there is any way to re-create the A over the E in such a way which excludes an image, but incorporates the Latin language intent with reagrd to the AE ligature.
Until then, I'm inclined to leave the original entry as is because it is the closest way to represent the actual inscription.
Any thoughts?

- I've reverted it back to my version for the reasons given above; I'd like to clarify that it's not meant to be Latin, it's meant to show the French, Dutch and German word for "Europe", which just happen to be "Europe", "Europa" and "Europa". —Nightstallion (?) 13:06, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Missing images
Could someone be so nice as to reupload images for Finland (04, 05, 06) Italy (06), San Marino (06) and the general image for the Rome Treaty coin? They've been deleted on the commons. —Nightstallion (?) 07:40, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, I noticed this- all of the regular euro coin images have also been deleted. Is there an issue with copyright of the coin images? If this is the case, can you tell me what licensing needs to be applied as well as the categories, etc? I have high quality images of all euro coins. I can also provide the appropriate copyright permissions and use perameters set by the European Central Bank.
- Nightstallion, if I uploaded all of these images, could you follow behind me and apply the appropriate categories and so forth to the images? I think I need to know what the licensing should be first.
- Thanks!
- --Theeuro 08:28, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
- Mh, I think it's easier if you ask one of the copyright gurus -- whoever that would be -- what license would be appropriate, as I know very little about this, I'm afraid... —Nightstallion (?) 13:13, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
- Images have been restored. There is still a deletion possibility in the future of all of the images, due to the licensing issue we have talked about. --Theeuro 18:19, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
- Great work, thanks a lot! Just keep me posted if problems arise again, I'll do my best. —Nightstallion (?) 18:40, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

“ | However, some member states of the European Union which had not yet introduced the euro also took part in this program. For example, Cyprus issued a £1 coin and Hungary a 50 Ft coin with the same design. | ” |

Fair use rationale for Image:€2 commemorative coin San Marino 2006.jpg
Image:€2 commemorative coin San Marino 2006.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Issues
I don't understand the change done on 17:41, 1 December 2007. Could this be explained on the page? Vincent Lefèvre (talk) 22:23, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
- What's your problem with it? —Nightstallion 14:36, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
- I would have thought that the number of issues for Finland would be 5/1 (as before the fix) since there are 5 'Y' and 1 'S'. —Vincent Lefèvre (talk) 21:58, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, right. Sorry, my mistake. —Nightstallion 13:14, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Image column
There is an issue regarding the fixed width vs. image centering in the article. There is a fixed width present in the image column of 160px. The purpose for this is due to the fact that the issue years are divided into individual sections and there would be an inconsistent width between sections for each of the images. The images themselves are set to a width of 150px, leaving 10px in the cell, within which the image then centers because of the <center> tag. Example:
Image | Country | Feature | Volume | Date |
---|---|---|---|---|
San Marino | Bartolomeo Borghesi | 110,000 coins | 15 December 2004[1] |
As the image is now centered, there is a consistent 5px on either side of all images in the article no matter the content in the other portions of the table row. That the columns are fixed at a width of 160px has nothing whatever to do with the alignment of the image in the column. This has been the standard since the article attained Featured Article status.

- How can I show you what I see? It does look bad. I am using Internet Explorer 6.0 and 7.0 and it looks bad in both. Can I take a portion of a screen shot and post it here? Whererever it says "...| width=160..." that particular image is not centered. Miguel.mateo (talk) 12:13, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
- That's strange, but ultimately a problem with IE's inability to correctly recognise valid HTML. —Nightstallion 14:56, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
- The images look centered in my IE6 and IE7 browsers. The issue may be local to your machine. Cheers. The € • T/C 15:59, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
- This is turning interesting. It is not my machine since I am seeing the same results on different machines, in different locations. However, went an extra step and found out that it renders OK in Safari, K-Meleon and Firefox, but it does not render OK with IE, Avantgo and AOL browser. Any clues what could it be?
- FYI, this is what I see:
- File:Table centering problems.JPG
- As you can see, it does not look good (the images are not centered, the row is not 160 pixels). It looks like IE expands the cell regardless of the width=160 instruction when the description in the next row (spanned across 5 columns) 'expands' the whole table to the width of the screen (since table width=100%). I am currently checking in some groups and forums about this particular problem of IE and seeing if there is any remedy to it. In de mean while, will it be OK to add "...| width=160..." to every single cell that represents a coin image in the table? By doing that in IE all images will be left-aligned (not centered but at least uniform).Miguel.mateo (talk) 06:32, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
- You must have a very wide monitor. I'm not sure it is necessary to add the width to every cell where the images are present; there may be another solution to this. It seems odd that my browsers display correctly while yours does not. Also, I notice that the Description text is centered... it appears left aligned in FF and IE on my machine as well as a number of off site machine as well. BTW- As far as I know this is the first time such an issue has been raised. Cheers. The € • T/C 09:31, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, I am still trying to find a solution, so far seems like none for IE, which is a shame. BTW, my resolution is 1280x1024, normal now a days. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Miguel.mateo (talk • contribs) 09:43, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
Guys (Nightstallion, TheEuro),
I think I finally did it. I changed only the first table (2004 coins). Please let me know if it does look good or not on your computers. It definitely looks better on mine, like in this sample (very wide monitor):
File:Table centering fixed.JPG
If you are OK with the current view, I will change all other tables. Miguel.mateo (talk) 07:51, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
Layout suggestion
How about making the table cell containing the picture span 2 rows? This would make the description line appear right to the picture and make the page more compact and less white-spacey if you understand what I mean. (add rowspan=2 to width=160 to see the effect) BenCastricum (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 09:27, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- I would agree, if the other main contributors say "Go ahead" I can help to make it happen. Miguel.mateo (talk) 10:25, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- Mh. Not a bad idea in principle, but what do we do with the commemorative coins jointly issued, where we've got more than ten pictures? —Nightstallion 10:49, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
- For the case of the common euro coin for 2009 how about a table similar to the Treat Of Rome? The new proposed table layout should be used only for the typical yearly commemorative coins that have a long description. The page will be way smaller with this new layout. Shall I proceed with 2004 as sample? Miguel.mateo (talk) 14:56, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
- Mh, fair enough, though we'll have to see if it doesn't look strange if only the common commemorative coins are treated differently... —Nightstallion 13:21, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks BenCastricum for the changes in the layout, way better now (I personally think). I still have an allingment problem, but will take a look at it later. Miguel.mateo (talk) 23:23, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

- The description used in the design contest only describes the theme of the image, not a forensic description of the design itself. The description that usually goes here is one from the official source- the Official Journal of the EU... which will be available in January 2009- presumably.

Common commemorative entries
Should there be a different subsection for these issues? I know there is some degree of continuity having the coins organized by order of release, however, perhaps the common issues can go at the bottom of the list? Only because if someone were to edit 2007 for example, the entire list will load and it makes editing something of a difficult process. Just a suggestion... Cheers. The € • T/C 17:58, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
- I agree. The current layout also is different from the new layout and for these coins a better layout can be done, considering that there is almost no description per coin. Maybe a two columns table or something similar would look better. Miguel.mateo (talk) 01:25, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

The latest is that Cyprus will join the other three countries issuing commemoratives honoring the 60th anniversarry of Human Rights Declaration. Monaco 2008 commemorative
Hi there, I heard from a very good source that Monaco's commemorative for this year has been cancelled due to the high prices that Price Kelly's 2007 coin took. I quickly searched on the web but found nothing substantial, except this site: http://english.euronotes.be/info.htm#germany08 (go down to see Monaco's comment). Any idea if this is true? Miguel.mateo (talk) 12:02, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
- The website you have referenced says 'probably canceled'. The issue is still on the schedule of the Paris mint. There is no way of knowing for certain if it is officially canceled until we pass into the year 2009 and none have been produced. Wait and see.Cheers. The € • T/C 16:54, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
- Theeuro the website says "Canceled. Probably due to high issue price in 2007" Correct me if I'm wrong but I Interpret that as it is canceled and that the cause of its cancellation is probably because of the high price issue. (I am not claiming this website to be a greater source than another just pointing out that your interpretation of the text differs from mine)Kevin hipwell (talk) 23:30, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
- I stand firm by my original interpretation that the website says 'probably canceled'. As to a greater source of information: I wouldn't put too much weight into what this website says... have you noticed the naughty pictures? It is generally best to get this kind of information direct from the originating source i.e. the Paris Mint. In any case, the Paris mint has this coin on their schedule for release this year. There is a possibility that it may be canceled, but until such time as the Paris mint removes this issue from their schedule for 2008- as far as I'm concerned- the coin will be produced. Cheers. List... not an article?
This seems to be more a list than an article. Does this sound fair? - Tbsdy lives (talk) 08:01, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
- Question: does it make any difference? The nature of the article is to list all commemorative 2 euro coins, hence this article is a list, and the list of 2 euro commemorative coins is this article. Miguel.mateo (talk) 08:08, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
- It make a difference for FA status. If it's a list, then it should be a featured article list, not a featured article. Also, if it's a list then it would be nice to have it part of an appropriate category. - Tbsdy lives (talk) 09:27, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
I'm sure the reason its a featured article is because it fits the Featured article criteria, I also see no reason why it cannot be a featured list as long as it fits the Featured list criteria. I'm not sure however, that an article can be both a featured list & a feature Article but I have not seen any rule that prevents this.Kevin hipwell (talk) 14:23, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

I suggest that instead of continuing listing all the commemorative coins in one page instead they should be sorted by years in a table then the user choose the year and the commemorative coins of that year will be shown. Release date of commemorative Italy €2 2008 & San Marino €2 2008
On the article the release date for the Italian commemorative €2 coin is April, This has also been said to be the release date of the San Marino €2 2008. Are you sure this is correct? The Royal Scandinavian Mint have said that the release date for Italy is October & for San Marino its May. Also the AASFN Philatelic & Numismatic Official Website Appears to back up the San Marino claim as the coin will not be on sale until 20th May. I have not seen either the San Marino or the Italian commemorative €2 on sale,If the current release date of April is true it should be available.Kevin hipwell (talk) 00:11, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
- There are essentially two dates for most 2 euro commemoratives and, I believe, most commemoratives in general... an FDI, which is the First Date of Issue and an FDC, which is the First Date of Circulation. While these coins may not yet be on sale and not yet available for the general public to purchase them, they have already been issued. Typically, the FDI is determined by the ECB, but the FDC is determined by the individual national banks. The long and short of the matter is this: unless otherwise specified, the dates published in the Official Journal of the EU (which is almost always the FDI) are used in this article. What would the EU be, after all, without their precious red-tape? Cheers. The € • T/C 06:39, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

The use of
First, apologies for my bad edit before, I lost my internet connection right at the moment of doing the edit and the result was garbage being sent out.
I want to discuss about a recent edit, removing all . As far as I am aware off, this is not a hard standard, and (at least for me) the numbers are by far easier to read. The only thing against is that people need a bit of knowledge of HTML when doing edits; but that does not apply to articles like this one, when a set of editors has been contributing and they have demonstrated the proper use of HTML in the past.
Please let me know if I am wrong on this one. Thanks, Miguel.mateo (talk) 11:47, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
- I agree. —Nightstallion 14:07, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
- I was hoping that my link to Template talk:Th would be sufficient, as it contains the reasons and links to additional reasons, but I'll try to summarize it here anyway. The rule about ordinal suffixes not being superscripted has been unchanged for 13 months on the official guideline. When an admin brought it up to WT:MOSNUM (see Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)/Archive 104#Suffix of ordinal numbers) earlier this month, I decided to investigate and found further reason to deprecate those superscripts. "Easier to read" seems to be the only reason to keep them, but I think it's a subjective argument that is outweighed by the objective evidence I found (in the MOSNUM archive). —LOL (talk) 18:44, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
- LOL, I read the article, and the strong points to remove the are:
- Difficult to edit (it does not apply here as mentioned before)
- It creates extra line spacing (so is the references, and this article if pretty well referenced)
- I really do not see the reason, and we have a set of editors that keep this article very tight in content. My opinion is that we should respect those editors view, and this is why I have opened the discussion here. If the consensus is "let's remove it" I will have nothing against.
- Miguel.mateo (talk) 00:37, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
- LOL, I read the article, and the strong points to remove the are:
- Despite what WT:MOSNUM has stipulated for the past 13 months, this article has been maintained by very capable editors, including at least one administrator, for much longer and has managed to achieve WP:FA status without adhering to the WT:MOSNUM rules regarding this matter. Subjectivity it is easier to read; objectively, the superscripted ordinals style coincides with the official information from which the information contained within this article is gleaned.
- Should we have a vote, then? Cheers. The € • T/C 03:38, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
- Miguel: Actually, the strong points would be the numerous style guides that deprecate these superscripts.
- Theeuro: The achievement of FA status predates the rule's addition by 16 months, so this article could not have been in violation of the rule at the time. Also, the official information's style is insignificant to this article's because it is not a style guide. There are many official sources on the net that use hyphens in the place of en dashes (–), but those are considered errors on Wikipedia.
- Anyhow, it does not seem that many other Wikipedians care about this issue, so I don't mind leaving it as is. —LOL (talk) 20:48, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for your understanding, and also thanks for your improvements to the article's style! —Nightstallion 15:24, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
- Keep as is. Cheers. The € • T/C 03:38, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

- Keep, definitely. Miguel.mateo (talk) 14:41, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Dates
I notice that one date in the lead and three in the 2009 coinage use the yyyy-mm-dd format. Should these not be change to match the Month dd, yyyy one which is used in the rest of the article, mainly as dates for each coin. Thanks Rambo's Revenge (talk) 10:56, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
- You're right, please go ahead. Miguel.mateo (talk) 11:15, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
- Actually, as this is a *European* article, it should all be "dd month year" per the European English standard, but due to Wikipedia preferences it's not really too important. —Nightstallion 11:24, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
Proposal to remove date-autoformatting
Dear fellow contributors
MOSNUM no longer encourages date autoformatting, having evolved over the past year or so from the mandatory to the optional after much discussion there and elsewhere of the disadvantages of the system. Related to this, MOSNUM prescribes rules for the raw formatting, irrespective of whether a date is autoformatted or not). MOSLINK and CONTEXT are consistent with this.
There are at least six disadvantages in using date-autoformatting, which I've capped here:
- (1) In-house only
- (a) It works only for the WP "elite".
- (b) To our readers out there, it displays all-too-common inconsistencies in raw formatting in bright-blue underlined text, yet conceals them from WPians who are logged in and have chosen preferences.
- (c) It causes visitors to query why dates are bright-blue and underlined.
- (2) Avoids what are merely trivial differences
- (a) It is trivial whether the order is day–month or month–day. It is more trivial than color/colour and realise/realize, yet our consistency-within-article policy on spelling (WP:ENGVAR) has worked very well. English-speakers readily recognise both date formats; all dates after our signatures are international, and no one objects.
- (3) Colour-clutter: the bright-blue underlining of all dates
- (a) It dilutes the impact of high-value links.
- (b) It makes the text slightly harder to read.
- (c) It doesn't improve the appearance of the page.
- (4) Typos and misunderstood coding
- (a) There's a disappointing error-rate in keying in the auto-function; not bracketing the year, and enclosing the whole date in one set of brackets, are examples.
- (b) Once autoformatting is removed, mixtures of US and international formats are revealed in display mode, where they are much easier for WPians to pick up than in edit mode; so is the use of the wrong format in country-related articles.
- (c) Many WPians don't understand date-autoformatting—in particular, how if differs from ordinary linking; often it's applied simply because it's part of the furniture.
- (5) Edit-mode clutter
- (a) It's more work to enter an autoformatted date, and it doesn't make the edit-mode text any easier to read for subsequent editors.
- (6) Limited application
- (a) It's incompatible with date ranges ("January 3–9, 1998", or "3–9 January 1998", and "February–April 2006") and slashed dates ("the night of May 21/22", or "... 21/22 May").
- (b) By policy, we avoid date autoformatting in such places as quotations; the removal of autoformatting avoids this inconsistency.
Removal has generally been met with positive responses by editors. Does anyone object if I remove it from the main text in a few days’ time on a trial basis? The original input formatting would be seen by all WPians, not just the huge number of visitors; it would be plain, unobtrusive text, which would give greater prominence to the high-value links. - Fair enough, but only if the date format used in European articles remains "23 July 2008". —Nightstallion 07:59, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Has Vatican release a coin this year?
I do not think so. the article says yes but it also says October in releasing date. Contradiction there.
Thanks, Miguel.mateo (talk) 12:59, 22 September 2008 (UTC)
- Actually what needs to be fixed is the release date of the Vatican coin, since it was on September 5. Will do that now. Miguel.mateo (talk) 13:00, 22 September 2008 (UTC)
Left and right
The following explanation is given in both a note and a footnote:
- Note: In heraldry, directions are often described as they would appear to the bearer of a coat of arms, rather than as they would appear to the viewer. Therefore, the following descriptions will use "facing to the left" when it would appear to the layman that the person depicted is facing to the right.
I know that this is true in heraldry. If you consider the historic use of arms, it makes some kind of sense to have this convention about left and right interpreted from the bearer's point of view when talking about coats of arms.
I did not know that the same convention is used in numismatics. Here on this Wikipedia article is the first time I have seen the heraldic convention applied to coins. There has never been a use where coins have a bearer, this convention makes no sense when describing coins.
Furthermore, the official descriptions in the Official Journal of the European Communities/Union do not follow this convention.
For example: http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/site/en/oj/2007/c_302/c_30220071214en00070007.pdf (there are many more examples)
The coin's inner section shows an effigy of His Majesty Albert II, King of the Belgians, in profile facing to the left. To the right of this, the royal monogram is displayed and, below it, the indication of the country ‘BE’. Underneath the effigy, the signature mark of the Master of the Mint is displayed on the left and the mint mark on the right, either side of the year. The outer ring of the coin depicts the twelve stars of the European flag.
In this description, left and right are clearly the viewer's left and right, not heraldic left and right.
Unless someone can prove the heraldic convention is actually used regularly in numismatics (which I doubt), left and right should be used from the viewer's point of view (and the note and footnote dropped).
— Adhemar (talk) 09:44, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
- Additional note
- Other Wikipedia articles also do not follow the heraldic left/right convention. For example (there are many more examples): Australian 1 dollar coin: Inscription of AUSTRALIA on the right hand side and ELIZABETH II on the left hand side. In this description, left hand side and right hand side are clearly the viewer's left and right, not heraldic left and right.
- — Adhemar (talk) 12:39, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
- Consider Belgium's first series and Albert II. When we look at this coin, the portrait is looking to the left. However, we are seeing the left side of his face, which means he is facing right (he is also looking to the right and we are seeing his left profile). Another way to think about this is when we look at someone who is looking at us. When we ask them to raise their right hand, from our point of view, their left hand moves. When we stand behind someone and ask the same question, from our point of view, their right hand moves. The same is true of coins. If you hold the coin so that you are behind it, the effigy is clearly facing right. The standards of heraldic terminology are used in the design and production process. However, Adhemar makes a good point that the reference materials do refer to descriptions from the viewer's POV. Cheers. The € • T/C 03:49, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- I agree it can make sense when you are talking about the left and the right side of the depicted subject (especially if it is a person). But my fundamental remark is not really about whether the convention makes sense, it is about whether the convention is actually used.
- Consider the description of the Portugal coin at http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/site/en/oj/2007/c_110/c_11020070516en00050005.pdf
- The inner part of the coin shows a cork oak (Quercus Suber). Under the branches, on the left hand side, the Portuguese coat of arms; on the right hand side, the word ‘POR TU GAL’ written on three lines.
- Here, left hand side and right hand side refer to the left and the right of the coin according to the viewer, not the tree's left and right side.
- My comment here can be considered a form of [citation needed]. I do not dispute that the non-viewer convention is used in heraldry (I have seen it often enough). I want a reliable authoritative citation that in the heraldic convention is used in numismatics (describing coins) as well.
- — Adhemar (talk) 10:55, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- Yet another example of the non-use of the heraldic convention: The American Numismatic Society uses the viewer's point of view for the words left and right. For example (there are many more examples): http://www.numismatics.org/exhibits/featured/nerofood.html Obverse: Head laureate right. IMP NERO CAES AUG P MAX TR P P P. Reverse: Annona facing right standing at left holding cornucopiae, Ceres facing left seated at right holding grain stalks; between them a table with modius on top; behind, ship's prow. ANNONA] AUGUSTI [CERES.

- Yet another example of the non-use of the heraldic convention on mints: Obverse_and_reverse#Coins_of_the_United_Kingdom —Preceding unsigned comment added by 157.193.214.17 (talk) 12:50, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
As a numismatist I would like to add weight to the comment that heraldic notions of direction are NEVER used in numismatics. This is true of all descriptions used in any numismatic litterature referring to coins of any age. Thus, from a numismatists point of view the descriptions given here are plainly wrong. If they were provided to any numismatist without the illustrations and he was asked to reproduce the image, his or her drawings would be the mirror image of the real thing.
(Getas75 (talk) 20:58, 28 October 2008 (UTC))
- I should have done this years ago, but I finally fixed this ugly, consistent mistake. About time. Please do not revert until you can show this notion that there are any numismaticians out there using the heraldic left/right convention with respect to coins.

The french version of this article has images of the edges, that would be interesting to add. Cheers OboeCrack (talk) 22:50, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

2010
is it still too early to start the 2010 list? there are already some officially announced issues --Melitikus (talk) 21:44, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
Scheduled and yes
Does "yes" mean that the coin (a) will be released, or (b) already is released? If (a) is applied for the table, Slovenia should be not marked as "yes". If (b) is applied, also Belgium, France, Portugal, San Marino and Vatican City should be marked as "yes". All this countries have already announced themes and, except for Vatican, designs of their future coins. ~ Illioplius (talk) 18:54, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
- "yes" means the Official Journal has released the design specifications, which means it is released de facto. —Nightstallion 19:38, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
2011 column and separation on ToR and EMU columns
I think that issue column for 2011 should be added and the ToR and EMU columns should be separated in some way. ~ Illioplius (talk) 08:16, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
- What do you propose for the latter? —Nightstallion 20:57, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
- I think they should be in separated table — placed under or next to this one. Now there are mixed common issues with normal that is, in my opinion, chaotic and does not give required overview. One table should contain normal €2 CCs and the second one common issues (if it is necessary, since all EMU members issued this coins). ~ Illioplius (talk) 18:33, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
- What do you think about this idea? ~ Illioplius (talk) 21:21, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
- Mh. Maybe have them in the same table, but add their columns at the end rather than in the middle? —Nightstallion 19:03, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
- For example. ~ Illioplius (talk) 21:19, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

Very Long Page
dont you think that the page is getting too long? dont you think it would be a better idea to keep this page as an introductory article and then have links to each year eg 2004, 2005, 2006 .... --Melitikus (talk) 15:04, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
- I don't think we should split it up, no... —Nightstallion 15:17, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
- It will keep getting bigger. At what size should it be split? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.46.198.232 (talk) 21:30, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
- I say it should be split now: 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 (reg and com), 2008, 2009 (reg and com), 2010 and 2011. Then there could be another page featuring all the various series ie. Bundeslander and the rest. It can't keep getting bigger! It would make it a lot easier to naviagte as well Theinfamousfinatic (talk) 23:40, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

Should be 2€ instead of €2
Unlike with dollar currency, which is indeed written as $2, the € sign is supposed to be written after the number. Differenxe (talk) 06:21, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Don't panic; deletions can take a little longer at Commons than they do on Wikipedia. This gives you an opportunity to contest the deletion (although please review Commons guidelines before doing so). The best way to contest this form of deletion is by posting on the image talk page.
