Wording

edit

Hi User:BitterGiant, I'm not entirely satisfied with the wording used in the opening sentence and would like to reach a compromise. The important factor is that "a by-election is expected" but is not guaranteed because UK electoral law carries no specific requirement for by-elections to be held in a timely manner, or at all. As a result, I think it's technically incorrect to say "on a date to be determined" because Parliament has yet to move a writ of election calling for a poll. The absence of a date being specified should clarify that it has not been fixed. I think appropriate wording could be "a by-election is expected in early 2018", which both acknowledges the WP:CRYSTAL notion of this page existing at all but also acknowledges a rough timescale for when the poll will take place (which is 99.99% likely to happen). Who formally moved the writ for the by election? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.32.68.244 (talk) 08:08, 3 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

The Government chief whip, Julian Smith. See the Hansard minutes here. I've added this to the main body of the article for you. Maswimelleu (talk) 08:31, 3 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
