December 22nd game

edit

This article is about the Sabres' current season- that is why it is not the Sabres' transactions for 2007-2008, not the Sabres' playoffs for 2007-2008, not the Sabres' overall standings 2007-2008, not anything else.

The game played on December 22nd involved a goal being scored to tie on the road with 7.2 seconds left, a shootout victory, and former Sabres adding to the drama. It was no ordinary regular season game, and it deserves to be added. It is not my fault that other hockey season pages are not as contributed to as this one, and great games are not added.

Please do not revert my edit until consensus has been gained on this issue. Thank you. Monsieurdl mon talk-mon contribs 19:09, 23 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

My evidence of material similar to mine added:

On January 16 in Phoenix, Washington Capitals rookie wing Alexander Ovechkin added himself to the league's historical highlight reel by scoring a goal from his back while rolling and sliding past the goal. Ovechkin was checked to the ice by Coyotes defenseman Paul Mara on a breakaway between the Coyotes' faceoff circles, but rolled to his back, reached over his head with his stick and hooked the puck in behind goaltender Brian Boucher. (Watch Ovechkin's goal at Google Video)

On February 22, 2007, eight games went to overtime, setting a record for most on one day.[25] Four of these games went to a shootout. One of the shootouts, between the Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres, was the culmination of a game that saw a huge fight, the result of a late hit on Sabres co-captain Chris Drury, that resulted in 100 penalty minutes and three game misconduct ejections.

The Senators opened the regular season with two straight wins over their rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Battle of Ontario. The season opener at Toronto ended in overtime with right winger Dany Heatley notching two goals and an assist to start the season off 1-0-0. That afternoon, Heatley also agreed to a new contract, a six year, $45 million deal.[4] The Senators earned another win the following day in their home opener, with captain Daniel Alfredsson scoring two goals. Before the game, the 2007 Eastern Conference Champions banner was raised to the rafters of Scotiabank Place.

The Sens went undefeated to start the season until the streak was snapped in their sixth game with a 5-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, on October 11. In a later win vs. Montreal, rookie and draft pick Nick Foligno scored his first NHL goal off a wrap-around attempt on Carey Price. He celebrated the goal by imitating his father Mike's signature goal celebration, a high jump.

After a 4 - 2 win against Montreal, the Senators entered into a 7-game losing skid (0-4-3) recording 3 points, matching a record for straight losses set in the 1995-1996 season.

I would say that this is just evidence that the other articles you list need to be pruned for historic significance, not evidence that this article needs entire paragraphs about games which are not, in the long run, historically significant. As I posted on your talk page, see WP:RECENT. Skudrafan1 (talk) 01:38, 24 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I will invite other WP:HOCKEY editors to the conversation, and I will also comply with your perfectly-reasonable request that I not revert again. :) Skudrafan1 (talk) 01:42, 24 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Here is the message I placed on WP:HOCKEY about this discussion. Skudrafan1 (talk) 01:46, 24 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Articles are for seasons in general, not specific games. There are no standards to including individual games and adding them basically equates to "Oh, this game was cool, so I'll add it." Games/days that include record breaking feats probably should be kept (i.e. The first two sentences of the second example.) but not every come from behind win. I would also possibly keep the first paragraph of the Senators example as that has the start of a season. --Michael Greiner 02:10, 24 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
In the grand scheme of things, the Dec 22 recap is not notable. The Ovechkin goal was indeed notable and historically significant as it is, in my opinion, one of the greatest goals of all time. The fact that 8 games went to OT setting an NHL record is notable because it was an NHL First. Michael Greiner recapped my points for the Ottawa entry. Come from behind wins happen in this league very often. Carolina came back from a 2 goal deficit against Toronto in the last 85 seconds of the game. I'm not about to add a complete recap to the Carolina 2007-08 season page because it is not really that notable. --Pparazorback (talk) 02:23, 24 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Last second comebacks are hardly unique or odd in hockey, so I don't see what makes this game so special, even accounting for Briere's return. It is simply an "I like it" addition rather than any thing of historical significance. If the article starts to get too large, I would cut stuff like that out. We already agreed on a compromise- I'd allow for it to be deleted if many more games like it appear, and if only scant few of them do, then it stays. Just to add, if goals like Ovechkin's are notable, then Geoff Sanderson's playoff goal against the Leafs when he was on his belly poking the puck in should count :) Monsieurdl mon talk-mon contribs 13:57, 24 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Seems to be covered but a single game that was won in this fasion is not significantly notable to be on this page. It's a season recap page, not a game by game summary. Come from behind wins with shootouts have happened a number of times now and the shootout is only a few years old so it will only become more and more common. -Djsasso (talk) 05:52, 27 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
