Graphic details
editThis was an important event to the Richmond area. I agree the page itself is important, but does it really need to be this graphic? Is it necessary to quote Gray at such length? To my mind, it's rather unseemly, but I didn't want to make any hasty deletions, as a rather inexperienced user. Does everyone else but me think this level of gory detail is normal? --Emily K.
- It is graphic, but I think the quote is useful in demonstrating Gray's state of mind at the time of the killings. Deco 04:04, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
This page is important because it was the first murder of the year in 2006. Kathryn Harvey owned a business well established in Carytown and her shop, Bryan's band, and the entire family were well known in Richmond, VA.
This was a family that was bound with tape, and forced into chairs in their own basement by two robbers. They had to watch one another have their throats slashed with box cutters from their own home.
This is not a vanity page. It is a page to recognize a terrible day in Richmond's history and the community, city, and state that was so affected by the family that was taken on that day.

Cleaned up some wording regarding "World of Mirth"
editI just wanted to throw in my 2 cents: I think Carytown doesn't need a separate page. It's only a few blocks within the city of Richmond. There is no "Carytown, Virginia." Carytown is realy a shopping district more than a neighborhood. When we lived in that area, we usually said we lived "in the Museum District," "west of the Boulevard," or maybe "near Carytown," but not "in Carytown," because that sounds like we lived in a store. A section of the Richmond, Va., article would be more appropriate for Carytown than giving it a whole separate page.--Emily K.
I removed the adjectives "whimsical and quirky" from this article and removed linking for Carytown. I also broke up Carytown from Richmond Virginia.
The adjectives, while I agree they are accurate descriptions of the store, they are probably POV and may not be universally held opinions.
Also, I'm not sure if there needs to be a separate article for Carytown, since the district is already addressed in the Richmond, VA article.
Also, by wording it as Carytown, Virginia, it implied that Carytown is a separate town in instead of just being a district of Richmond.
I also cleaned up wording for Woodland Heights. You can check the history to see the changes in detail. --Dino213aa 05:22, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
four murders but five charges?
editI know nothing about this other than what is in this article, but it appears that four people were murdered. However, the murderer was found guilty of five counts of murder. I'm not au fait with the American legal system, but this seems odd - is this a mistake, did he murder someone else or is there some other reason for the extra count? It should either be explained or corrected. Thryduulf 09:43, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
motive?
editI don't exactly follow... what was this guy's motive? It isnt all that clear from the article? Or was he just another regular serial killer with his own personal demons to exorcise?
xCentaur | talk 19:18, 26 December 2006 (UTC) I'll tell you the motive. PURE EVIL!!!!!174.130.128.76 (talk) 01:07, 24 April 2011 (UTC)

Overhaul
editI expanded the scope of the article to include the entire spree, wrote up the thing, and renamed it. I'm not sure if the article name is the best one, and I'm not entirely happy with the fact that I classed 2 murders and 1 serious assault as a "prelude". The point I wanted to make is that until the Harvey family murders, these individual cases were not receiving a great deal of media attention (particularly in the case of Treva Gray), nor was there any suspicion that the same person/people were responsible for them.
If anyone has a better idea for the "Prelude" section name or the article name, go nuts.
The new content, I hope, also answers the previous 2 questions on this page. wintersmith 14:59, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
This is a dramatic improvement since I last read this page. I disapproved of the gory detail laid out last time, but didn't know what needed to be included and what could be excised. The descriptions of the crimes as it stands now are acceptable in my opinion, not glossed over, but not reliving the whole sickening event either. I also agree it is appropriate to treat this series of events as a whole.71.63.119.49 19:16, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

WP:Death Assessment Commentary
editThe article was rated C-class, for lack of Coverage, particularly regarding the following line:
- "June 15, 2011: Gray's execution is stayed for 90 days."
It's been almost a year. Was the execution carried out? Was it commuted to a prison sentence? This part of the article needs to be updated, and it should pass B-class. Boneyard90 (talk) 10:35, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
- I realize the above is an old comment, but as a general rule in the US, NOBODY is going to get executed within the space of a year, not even in a state like Virginia that executes people on a regular basis. It's very likely you won't even get through the first stage of the appeal process in a year, and for capital crimes there are multiple levels of appeal. You could conceivably have a Gary Gilmore type who decided to drop all appeals and just let himself be executed, but that's highly unlikely and if it did happen there would be arguments made that a person is not in his or her right mind when they decide to let the state put them to death. Also, it is not uncommon for these cases to drop out of the news for long periods of time while there are appeals and post-conviction proceedings going on, and only resurface when an execution date is set or some other momentous decision is made by a court. As shown by the article it is now 2016 and Gray's execution is still being stayed for appeals - this is normal, it takes many years to execute someone. TheBlinkster (talk) 10:19, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

editThis article really needs to be cleaned up. If I get a chance, I'll work on it, but seriously, half the sources are 404. TheBlinkster (talk) 23:06, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
Ricky Gray
editIs his name Ricky Javon Gray or Ricky Jovan Gray? Does anyone know for sure? I am seeing a lot of "hits" for each name. But, his case at the U. S. Supreme Court and his "official" entry at the Virginia Department of Corrections both list his name as Jovan. See here: [1]. Also, see here: [2]. (Enter his name "Ricky Gray" in the Offender Search box.) Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 19:08, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
- Most of the Wikipedia entries listed him as "Javon". I changed them to "Jovan". Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 19:17, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
- And this Supreme Court of Virginia case lists him as "Ricky Javon Gray, a/k/a Ricky Jovan Gray": Gray v. Commonwealth. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 19:28, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
