Runner-up more important than champion?

edit

When I type "2002 snooker [world championship]" into Google, a summary of this Wikipedia page features prominently. It shows "Runner-up: Stephen Hendry" but does not mention Peter Ebden the champion.

Yes, I do realize this is Google's fault, not Wikipedia's. However the Wiki gurus should be intrigued enough to investigate why Google does this.Jamesdowallen (talk) 05:28, 30 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Qualifying section all wrong?

edit

Round 1 qualifying matches are the same as in 2001 World Championship, next section contains round 1 matches again and most of the matches are listed twice. 95.174.213.117 (talk) 05:39, 12 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

This was apparently noticed a couple of years ago ^^^ but not picked up for some reason... An unregistered IP pointed out this morning (thanks!) that Round 1–2 of Qualifying is a total mess. Yes, I have to agree. I've attempted to make sense of it and reorder the tables but I've sadly failed so would someone else like to have a go? There's no logic to it and I can't find any sources for any of the matches. The whole of the qualifying section was added back in April 2017 by an unregistered IP but no sources were provided for Round 1–2 or pre-qualifying. Many of the matches show up several times in the table, some in both rounds Q1 and Q2, e.g. Kristján Helgason vs. Surinder Gill, Nick Dyson vs. Ian Brumby, etc. etc. Can anyone else make head or tail of this and more importantly can anyone find a source? The global-snooker source doesn't go that far back. I suggest this table should be deleted altogether if it can't be fixed. I've removed it and just left the subheadings, in case it can be easily rectified and put back. Rodney Baggins (talk) 07:41, 24 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
I can't source to a RS, but the results are on Cuetracker... Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 08:53, 24 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Lee, I'll have a look and see what I can do. I suppose cuetracker might come in handy in the absence of anything else. BTW, major congrats on your adminship, and hope you are keeping safe... Rodney Baggins (talk) 09:41, 24 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
I've updated the tables from Cuetracker but I don't know the venues/dates. I think the earlier rounds might have been in Telford but I can't be sure without a source and I don't know the exact dates. Any ideas? Rodney Baggins (talk) 09:08, 26 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
BennyOnTheLoose might have some funky offline sources for this? Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 17:27, 26 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
Greetings Rodney Baggins and Lee Vilenski. According to the March 2002 Snooker Scene, following amateur pre-qualifying, seven rounds of qualifying were played at the Manhattan Club, Harrogate. Rounds 4 to 7 I have results for in Snooker Scene; Rounds 1 to 3 I should be able to check, player by player, in the 2004 CuesSport book. (Qualifying Round 1 in the Wikipedia articles is referred to as Qualifying Round 11 in the CueSport book.) After Harrogate there were a further five rounds of qualifying at Telford International Centre, which again are covered in the March Snooker Scene. The final qualifying round was held at Newport on March 16 and 17, and is covered in the April 2002 Snooker Scene. I'll start having a crack at this today BennyOnTheLoose (talk)
I've added some references and a few details. I think it would be better to add more detail about the final stages next, rather than more about early qualifying rounds. I'll probably add some details for the Crucible stages in the next few days. BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 15:42, 1 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Wow, that's above and beyond, thanks v. much Benny! I took an interest in this because I couldn't understand why it was so messed up in this diff where someone had noticed that we had Robert Milkins playing himself in qualifying! I'm particularly interested in this championship because it was the "Hendry the 8th" that never was. I was going to do some more work on the Crucible rounds myself at some point but feel free to step in and tackle it! Totally gutted that we don't have the 2020 World Championship to look forward to later this month... I feel so sorry for Judd Trump, the Crucible Curse has well and truly struck him, not even getting the chance to defend his title, poor lad! Thanks again. Rodney Baggins (talk) 17:35, 1 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I'm at a loss too! Although, strictly speaking next years event will have him defend, and I'd suggest the literally meaning of the Crucible Curse will change. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 17:42, 1 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Lee, you say "next year's event" like you get the feeling it ain't gonna happen this year at all. World Snooker said "possibly July or August 2020" but that would mean two world championships taking place in one season which doesn't make sense at all. You think it might be scrapped altogether? Rodney Baggins (talk) 18:32, 1 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I don't want that to be the case, but I think it's a big possibility. If it were me, I'd scrap a few of the early season tournaments, and play it when they were supposed to be playing. We won't know. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 19:12, 1 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Rodney Baggins How about if I stick in some stuff gleaned from Snooker Scene and The Times, then you can complement that using online sources, and make it actually readable? BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 18:04, 1 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Benny, that sounds like a very good plan. I think I already have a few online sources tucked away in my notes. Rodney Baggins (talk) 18:32, 1 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • Could The championships were sponsored by cigarette manufacturer Embassy. A total prize fund of £1,615,770 was awarded at the event, with the winner receiving £260,000 be combined into one sentence?
