2004 page layout years

edit

There is a discussion on my talk page on page layout.

For most of the last three hundred years there is inconsistency and duplication between the year in topic paragraph, the "see also" box and what is on the year by topic pages. Prior to 1950 I am pretty convinced we can painlessly (except for sore fingers) delete all of the year in topic paragraphs and ensure that the material goes into a "see also" box, creating such a box where none exists. Post 1950, particularly from the "year in US television" link a lot of material has been added to this paragraph as highlights (sometimes making up most of the page content pointed at).

Personally I think we should still delete the paragraph, keep the box linking to the topic sites and move any particularly important parts of the year in topic paragraph to the main chronological list. This does involve undoing quite a bit of work which someone has done.

Therefore, unlike for prior to 1950 (where I've said no objection= I do it) for post 1950 I won't touch these pages unless a significant number of people agree with the change. (I am also unlikely to get the pre 1950 stuff done before summer unless the service speed improves dramatically). (talk)--BozMo 14:21, 7 May 2004 (UTC)Reply

Birthdate subheads

edit

What are the birthdate subheads two months (like "January-Febuary")? Why not individual months, like events? --DAW0001 (talk) 17:54, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think it's because there aren't enough births in each month to justify it - having a section for each month would lengthen the table of contents. It's the same at 1958 and 1960. Ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Years. Graham87 07:50, 2 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
OK, but it seems to me that there are not many fewer birthdates per month than event, at least in 1959. --DAW0001 (talk) 23:20, 3 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Cyprus independence?

edit

This article 1959 says Cyprus gained independence on August 15, 1959.

The Cyprus article says it was 16 August 1960.

This article also says August 16, 1960.

Collage

We should replace an image with Dyatlov Pass incident 02.jpg

The Dyatlov Pass incident drew in international attention and was a mystery that was not concluded until recently. I know, the death toll was only 9, but it's not about the death toll, it's about the details of the event. DementiaGaming (talk) 12:50, 11 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Typhoon Vera damage at Handa, Japan; The MOSFET (MOS transistor) is invented by Mohamed Atalla and Dawon Kahng at Bell Labs.; Tsarong Dazang Dramdul and several Tibetan monks captured by the PLA during the 1959 Tibetan uprising; Fidel Castro takes over Cuba; The squirrel monkey Baker and the rhesus macaque Able were the first two primates to be safely returned after entering space in the Jupiter AM-18 mission; Site of Australopithecus boisei discovery in Tanzania; Luna 3 became the first spacecraft to photograph the far side of the Moon; Richard Nixon and Nikita Khrushchev at the American National Exhibition and gave a famous speech.
I have heard of this event and I also believe that it is quite significant. It may be worth a place in the collage. I plan to replace Miss Baker the squirrel monkey because upon careful review of the data, I found that it only reached suborbital space, not orbit, which greatly reduces its importance. This is because in 1947, fruit flies safely returned to Earth from suborbital travel, and the first animal to safely return from orbit was the Soviet space dog in 1960.
However, after this vacancy is created, in addition to the event you mentioned, there are several other strong contenders for this spot, such as the 1959 Mexico hurricane, French dam collapse, the day the music died, Rwandan Revolution, Project Excelsior, Léopoldville riots and Laotian civil war.
