1949 was the year in which the communists defeated the nationalists, sending the government of Chiang Kai-shek into exile in Taiwan. All of these things happened in China as it is commonly understood, as a geographic reference. For comparison, we do not have separate articles on Nationalist-controlled Spain in 1939 and Republican-controlled Spain in 1939, or on the Union states of the United States in 1863 and the Confederate states of the United States in 1863. Readers should not need to jump back and forth between two pages to see the important events in the same place over the same year.
