Rockwell City–Lytton Community School District

Rockwell City–Lytton Community School District was a school district headquartered in Rockwell City, Iowa.[1]

In addition to Rockwell City it served Lytton and Jolley.[2]

The district was formed on July 1, 1993, through the merger of the Rockwell City Community School District and the Lytton Community School District.[3] The merger aimed to improve educational opportunities and resources for students in both districts, especially in light of declining student populations.

In 1998, the district had 612 students. By 2011, the student population had declined by 24%, reaching 467 students.[4] The district's decline in enrollment mirrored broader trends in rural areas across the state, with smaller populations and fewer students in public schools.

To address these challenges, in 2009, the Rockwell City–Lytton district and the Southern Cal Community School District began discussions on collaboration. This led to the sharing of athletic programs starting in the 2010–2011 school year. The districts also implemented a whole grade sharing system in which students attended schools in both districts, starting with grades 5 through 12 in the 2012–2013 school year.[5] The shared grades allowed for more resources and opportunities for students in the combined districts, particularly in terms of extracurricular activities and specialized education.

In 2013, after years of collaboration and resource sharing, the districts held a vote on whether to officially consolidate. The vote, held on February 5, 2013, was overwhelmingly approved, with 253–67 votes in Rockwell City–Lytton and 340–86 in Southern Calhoun.[4] The successful vote reflected the growing support among the communities for a more unified school district. On July 1, 2014, the two districts officially merged to form the South Central Calhoun Community School District.[3] This merger aimed to strengthen the district's educational offerings and ensure the long-term viability of schools in the region.

Since the merger, the South Central Calhoun district has continued to evolve, focusing on improving student achievement, offering a range of extracurricular opportunities, and ensuring financial sustainability in a rural context. The district now serves a larger area and continues to build on the collaborative foundation that was established during the sharing agreements.

Schools

Its schools included Rockwell City–Lytton Elementary School in Rockwell City, Rockwell City–Lytton Middle School in Lytton, and Rockwell City–Lytton High School in Rockwell City.[6]

In 2009, the district closed the middle school and later sold it for $10,000 to a private individual.[7]
