The objectives of the portal

edit

Let's start this. As the number of Portuguese wikipedians is growing, this portal project is the best way to unite all those interested in developing articles pertaining to Portugal. Joaopais proposed the creation of wikiprojects about Portuguese geography and people, it's an interesting ideia, I am also a supporter of the ideia that articles about Portuguese places should have a standard structure. I'm currently working on the articles about Portuguese municipalities and in the respective list. Any further suggestions and objective things to do are welcome. Afonso Silva 16:05, 28 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

For now, the rules are quite simple. Edit whatever you want in order to improve the Portal, add sections, add news, quotes, etc. Please, respect the fact that the "Selected article", "Selected picture" and "Selected biography" should stay in the Portal main page for one week, starting every Monday. If you want to propose an article/picture/biography just add it here: Portal:Portugal/Selected content candidates, tell us why do you think it should be selected and sign with date. These selections are, for now, not a way to show the best articles related to Portugal, but those who are quite good but need a little more improving or are being nominated for featured wikipedian content. Gameiro 16:51, 28 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

If you want to enter the official group of maintainers just talk to Afonso Silva or Joaopais (aka Gameiro).

News

edit

I think the news in the news section could should have the day, like in the majority of the portals. What do you think? Afonso Silva 23:34, 1 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I totally agree. I forgot to do that. Thanks. Gameiro 01:25, 5 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

List of municipalities of Portugal

edit

I'm currently working on the article List of municipalities of Portugal, trying to make a whole new list, with a new format, if somebody could help it would be great as it is a very hard task. The sources I use to fill the fields in the tables are the website in the references and the articles of each municipality, howver, some municipalities (perhaps 40%) still don't have their own article, if someone could start creating them from the red links in the list, it would be fine, but please, use the Template:Infobox Municipality pt, and fill it in the same way you find it in the articles where it is included, in order to create a standard article structure.

I don't know how wikiprojects are created or mantained, but I'm able to help if someone explains me that. The WikiProject:Portuguese geography would be really useful. Afonso Silva 18:08, 28 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

There is also an another portuguese municipality template: Template:Municipalities of Portugal Infobox. You can see that one here: Alijó. Perhaps the two should be merged. Kaldari 00:29, 6 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I need your advice here. The titles of the Portuguese monarchs' articles are quite a mess.

What should we do with all these issues?

Please read Wikipedia:Naming conventions (names and titles), I started and I found some relevant information for this case. I think we should standardize the names, all in Portuguese or all in English, I don't understood what the convention says. For those who where the soles ruling with their name, I think the number should not be present, but the convention says the number should be used if it was present in the official name, I don't know if their were used or not, but the Bridge in Oporto is called "Luiz I", for example, but I think you know those things better than me. If António was really king, he should have the title, was he? I believe in your word, I just don't know. About the spanish dinasty, the convention says: Where a monarch has reigned over a number of states, use the most commonly associated ones. For example, Charles II of England, not Charles II of England, Scotland and Ireland; Wilhelm II of Germany, not Wilhelm II of Prussia, although there should be redirects from these locations. That's it, I am not shure about what we should do, the major point is the translation or not of the names, what do you think abou that? Afonso Silva 22:53, 10 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • In English Portuguese kings should use its English name, the same occurs in Portugal to British kings. The same occurs in name of Popes, etc. This is due to historical relationship. So if a king is Pedro IV it should be Peter IV. The Brazilian emperors are another issue and are out of the portal's scope. -Pedro 00:10, 13 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject:Portuguese history

edit

Is anyone willing to help me out cleaning up the History of Portugal articles? I'm currently working on History of Portugal (1834-1910) and I'd appreciate some help. Anyway, if someone could just create some excellent concise stubs for Economic history of Portugal, Cultural history of Portugal, Arts history of Portugal, Demographic history of Portugal and Diplomatic history of Portugal would be just perfect. Another thing we need to do is to get rid of the timelines in Prehistoric Portugal and Pre-Roman Portugal. The timelines ate quite good, but they are not welcomed in the article, especially because they've have already an article of their own. Thanks. Gameiro 01:25, 5 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • We need to think in this issue seriously, There are many articles that are stubs or with various problems with more than one person foccus on it we can make them a little diamond. Hello fellow compatriots! Don't leave me alone in the Portal... you know I'll ruin it sooner or later. Afonso Silva 11:42, 20 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm glad you are back! I hope we gather more contrinutors in order to improve the Portal. Afonso Silva 20:40, 22 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'll be away from wikipedia until Easter Sunday, I hope the Portal keeps up to date. But after all, it's Portugal, so things like that are not that unusual. Afonso Silva 09:37, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

edit

I've created the archives of the selected content, please add the current content to the archive every time it is updated. Good work! Afonso Silva 20:40, 22 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Updating the content

edit

Due to the lack of participation in the Portal, I propose that the content starts being chosen for a fortnight period instead of a week. Perhaps nobody will say anything, so, I'll not update it this week. Afonso Silva 18:50, 3 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I propose that the featured picture should be presented alone, without text. Afonso Silva 18:56, 3 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject Portuguese geography

I created the WikiProject Portuguese geography, go there, have a look, and say something. Thanks! Afonso Silva 14:34, 11 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • I've rearranged the template for municipalities, but a guy doesnt accept any change and even decided to vandalize the article about my city by putting a controversial coat-of-arms, as if I would be hurt with that. Thus I've created a new one: Template:Infobox Municipality portugal (Used here:Póvoa de Varzim)., which is a similar template to the one that is used in the Portuguese and Spanish wikipedias, which include flags. Why so much fuss about flags, is he the same guy that was continuously vandalizing Póvoa's flag in commons?! Municipalities have flags, some even anthems and mottos.---Pedro 00:27, 17 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fortress of Sagres

edit

I'm currently translating the Portuguese article of the Fortaleza de Sagres to English, but the article is kind of long and my translation totally sucks, so I'll need some help. I have already translated a bit, but most of it is yet to do, but what if I save the article as it is anyway and everybody gives a little help, translating a bit every day to finish it quickly. It's just that I will probably won't have much time to finish it today, I don't want to lose what I have done and also, I'd like some help, not only to finish it but checking for mistakes, errors, and also syntax and grammar. (PT: Construção das frases e assim...). So... --Serte 18:12, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject Portugal

edit

Hey kids. As some of you may have noticed, a brand new project to organize, improve, clean and find problems in Portugal-related articles was started (by me). All the structure is now finished. Please note that this project does not affect existing minor projects; instead it embraces them. We do however need someone to take the lead of WP:PT and try to recruit people to join the project, as well as establish priorities and a decent To-do list. Please help. Everyone is welcome to.

In Portuguese: Alô.

Stagnation

edit

It's quite clear that this portal is stagnated which might result in demotion from its featured portal status. I'd like to know if there are still users out there maintaining this portal. If it turns out that this portal has been abandoned, I can join the maintainers list.--Húsönd 21:48, 1 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Proposal to merge Prehistoric Spain with Prehistoric Portugal & move to Prehistoric Iberia

edit

Currently, the text of Prehistoric Spain seems really to be about prehistoric Iberia. Similarly, the text of Prehistoric Portugal seems really to be about the same thing. This would be perfectly understandable seeing as there was no Spain and no Portugal in prehistoric times. I have argued therefore that it would be best to have these articles merged under a title which indicates the geographical region rather than the modern states. I have proposed the articles be merged and moved to Prehistoric Iberia. Please come and discuss the proposal. Jimp 09:15, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello Jim. If the merge goes through, what shall we do with Pre-Roman Portugal? You see, Prehistoric Spain encompasses a period that the "Portuguese" articles differentiated into Prehistoric Portugal and Pre-Roman Portugal. Should we merge them all? The Ogre 13:48, 21 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

New stub

edit

I created a new Portuguese-related stub: Tomé Piers‎. Perhaps someone can develop it further. I came across him when reading for my new article The coming of Islam to Indonesia (1200 to 1600) and hence the stub currently has this focus. Sorry, I have no idea where else to mention this. Portuguese nationality issue

edit

The Talk:Nelly Furtado comes with a pertinent question I hope someone is willing to clarify. Do we have two kinds of portuguese , the ethnics and the citizens? Are there any more kinds of portuguese not listed in the portuguese constituition we should be aware of when called portuguese? I know there are the thousands of portuguese descents all over the world , the ethnic portuguese all over the world, the naturalized portuguese all over the world and the wanna be portuguese all over the world. But what is the difference between them? I am baffled by the technicalities and the complexity of the ethnonym portuguese. Can some one enlighten? Have fun. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.69.73.226 (talk) 15:13, 30 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Vasco da Gama

edit

Pay close attention to this article, as it is notoriously anti-Portuguese biased and written by and to suit the tastes of the post-colonial Indian nationalism. A last straw was enough to me: a persistent attempt to belittle Gama as a navigator. See the Charted Waters issue in the discussion of the article. Being so, I would like to know who gave the "high quality" classification to this farce. DFN1500 (talk) 17:06, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
