- 1971 - United States National Security Advisor, Henry Kissinger, secretly meets with Premier Zhou Enlai. This paved the way for Kissinger's second visit in August of that year and President Richard Nixon's visit the following year. This is the first instance of such a high ranking US official travelling to the People's Republic of China.
