Matthew Ryan Sokol (born November 9, 1995) is an American professional football tight end for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Michigan State and began his career as undrafted free agent, landing his first roster spot in 2020 with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Los Angeles Chargers
editSokol signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 NFL draft on April 27, 2019.[2] He was waived during final roster cuts on August 31, 2019,[3] and signed to the team's practice squad the next day.[4] He was released on September 18,[5] and re-signed to the practice squad on October 1.[6] He was released again on October 9, 2019.[7]
Jacksonville Jaguars
editSokol signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars' practice squad on November 18, 2019.[8]
Detroit Lions
editSokol signed a reserve/future contract with the Detroit Lions on December 31, 2019.[9] He was waived during final roster cuts on September 5, 2020,[10] and signed to the team's practice squad on October 21, 2020.[11] He was released three days later.[12]
Los Angeles Chargers (second stint)
editSokol re-signed with the Chargers' practice squad on October 31, 2020.[13] He was elevated to the active roster on December 26 for the team's week 16 game against the Denver Broncos, and reverted to the practice squad after the game.[14] He was promoted to the active roster on January 1, 2021.[15]
On August 31, 2021, Sokol was waived by the Chargers.[16]
Jacksonville Jaguars (second stint)
editSokol re-signed with the Jaguars' practice squad on September 2, 2021.[17]
Detroit Lions (second stint)
editOn January 12, 2022, Sokol signed a reserve/future contract with the Lions.[18] He was waived on May 10, 2022.[19]
New England Patriots
editOn May 11, 2022, Sokol was claimed off waivers by the New England Patriots.[20] He was waived on August 30, 2022 and signed to the practice squad the next day.[21][22] He signed a reserve/future contract on January 10, 2023.[23]
On August 29, 2023, Sokol was waived by the Patriots and re-signed to the practice squad.[24][25] He was not among the team's players signed to reserve/future contracts in 2024, and thus became a free agent at the expiration of his practice squad contract.[26][27]
Pittsburgh Steelers
editOn July 30, 2024, Sokol signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers.[28] He was waived on August 27, and later re-signed to the practice squad.[29][30] He was released on September 24, 2024. He again signed to the practice squad on November 6, 2024.
