The 2024 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election featured 589 candidates from all major parties in the state. Mahesh Kothe contested the north Solapur seat on an NCP ticket. The NCP, a very selective party, released its list of 45 candidates just a month before the election.[2] [3]

The 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election featured Shri Mahesh Kothe running as an independent candidate, supported in the campaign by film industry celebrities such as Sneha Ullal and Brahmanandam.[4]

Early life and education

edit

Mahesh Kothe [5] graduated from I.I.B.M. Institute of Business Management, New Delhi.[1] He is a social worker & a Corporator.

Tenure as mayor

edit

Kothe served as the mayor of the Solapur Municipal Corporation from 1994 to 1995.[6]

Solapur's first IT Park

edit

Mahesh Kothe, Director of the Solapur Smart City Project and former mayor, mentioned in a media interview that the IT park will be established on 32 acres along Dongaon Road, which is situated approximately 3 kilometers from the city of Solapur.

The exodus of talent from Solapur to cities like Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and even overseas motivated him to launch this initiative. He believes that affordable rents, lack of traffic congestion, and top-notch amenities will draw IT companies to Solapur. In the years to come, Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities will meet the demand for IT parks.

The Hinjawadi IT park's design influenced the planning of the Solapur IT Park, which was developed by addressing the mistakes noted during the construction of the Hinjawadi IT park.

The complex will comprise an international school, a top-tier hospital, a shopping mall, and a luxury hotel to fulfill the needs of the employees.[7]

The political journey

edit

Shri Mahesh Kothe worked hard through many ups and downs during his journey as a political leader.

Mahesh Kothe is a prominent figure in the politics of the Solapur Municipal Corporation. Kothe has been a lifelong follower of the late Vishnupant Kothe, a loyalist of Congress leader Sushil Kumar Shinde. In 2014, Kothe contested the election from Shiv Sena against MLA Praniti Shinde in the City Central constituency, defying the Congress. In 2019, he rebelled against Shiv Sena and contested the election against Congress MLA Praniti Shinde from the city center constituency after Shiv Sena rejected his ticket. [8]

Kothe was unable to achieve his dream despite running for the Assembly elections three consecutive times—first with the Congress party, then with the Shiv Sena, and finally as a rebel from the Shiv Sena. As a result, Kothe decided to join the Nationalist Congress Party. In announcing his decision, he claimed that Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray had discussed this move. Sharad Pawar was present at the Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan in Mumbai when Kothe arrived with his supporters to join the NCP. However, he was unable to join the party then.[9]

NCP Supremo Sharad Pawar has always been particular about the expectations he has for his fellow party members. He recently tweeted his support for Shri Mahesh Kothe in completing the unfinished projects in Solapur city after Kothe expressed interest in joining the NCP party. [10]

Kothe had been a prominent figure in the Solapur Municipal Corporation. In 2019, during his struggle to obtain support from his party, Shiv Sena, of which he was the District Head, he secured the backing of 18 Sena corporators.[11] Unfortunately, Kothe had to contest the elections independently, which led to his defeat.[12]

As Sena, the NCP, and Congress have been in alliance in Maharashtra for quite some time, there have been instances where workers and leaders from one party have switched to another. This has created tensions within the alliance. A clear example of this was when Shri Sharad Pawar's social media team deleted a tweet that mentioned Kothe joining the NCP. [13] [14]

Kothe found himself contesting against his senior friend's daughter, Praniti Shinde, during the 2014 Maharashtra elections. [15]

In the past, a couple of MLAs with Telugu roots have been elected in the state. Currently, there are nearly 1 crore Telugus settled in the state, who have shown their support for candidates like Shri Mahesh Kothe and Shri Narsayya Adam. [16]

Kothe secured third place as an independent candidate in the 2019 election. If Shiv Sena had supported Kothe with its candidacy, the 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election elections between Kothe and Praniti shinde would have been a tough fight. [17]

Kothe strongly supports development-focused politics. During the 2024 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election, he expressed his concerns by inviting opponents to discuss only the topic of city development. [18] [19] [20]
