Kate McMullan (née Hall; born January 16, 1947) is an American author of children's books. She has published over 100 books. Notable works include the Myth-o-Mania and Dragon Slayers' Academy book series.

Biography

McMullan was born on January 16, 1947, in St. Louis to Lee Aker and Kathryn Hall. She received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Tulsa in 1969.[1]

After receiving her bachelor's degree, McMullan taught grade school in Los Angeles, after which she returned to school, receiving a Master of Arts from the Ohio State University in 1972.[1] From 1972 to 1975, McMullan taught at a United States Air Force base in Hahn, West Germany. Upon return, she moved to New York City, where she worked as an editor at Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Inc.[1]

While in New York, she met Irish-Canadian illustrator James Burroughs McMullan (born 1934).[2] The couple married on June 9, 1979. They have a daughter, Leigh Fenwick.[1]

Starting in 1989, McMullan taught at New York University School of Continuing Education.[1]

Five of McMullan's books are Junior Library Guild selections: Pearl and Wagner: Three Secrets (2004),[3] Pearl and Wagner: Two Good Friends (2004),[4] Pearl and Wagner: One Funny Day (2009),[5] School! (2010),[6] and I'm Cool! (2015).[7]

Bank Street College of Education has included seven of McMullen's books on their lists of the best books of the year. The following books have been included on their list of the best books for children under age five: I’m Big! (2011),[8] I'm Fast! (2013),[9] I'm Cool! (2016),[7][10][a] and How Do You Go to Sleep? (2020).[11] The following books have been included on their list of the best books for children ages five to nine: Pearl and Wagner: One Funny Day (2010)[12] and Pearl and Wagner: Five Days till Summer (2013).[13] In 2011, School! was included on their list of best books for children ages nine to twelve.[6][14]

The Association for Library Service to Children has included I Stink! (2002)[15] and Pearl and Wagner: One Funny Day (2010)[5][16] on their list of Notable Children's Books. They included the I'm Fast! audiobook on their list of Notable Children's Recordings.[17][18]

I Stink! was included on Booklist's 2002 Booklist Editors' Choice: Books for Youth list.[19]
