History

edit

The Jan Suraaj campaign began with a Padyatra (foot march) across various districts in Bihar, where Kishor and his team engaged with local communities to build a connection with the grassroots and gather insights for policy formulation.[3] The campaign was launched to bring transformative political change in the state of Bihar in India.[4] The campaign later become a political party on 2 October 2024 emerging from a grassroots campaign aimed at transforming the socio-political landscape of Bihar,[5] one of India’s most underdeveloped states.[6] The campaign is focused on engaging the public at the grassroots level to address critical issues such as education, health, and employment.[7]

Ideology

edit

The Jan Suraaj Party is set to contest all 243 Assembly seats in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, challenging the existing political establishment.[8] The party’s strategy includes mobilising support from various sections of society and promoting a vision of inclusive and sustainable development.[9] Prashant Kishore in his interviews promised that he will legalise alcohol in Bihar by changing Liquor law which are implemented by Nitish Kumar Government, He also mentioned that he will create business opportunities for development of the state and boost employment generation.[10]

The leadership structure of the party is focused on collective decision-making. The first president of the party is expected to come from marginalised communities.[11][12]

Jan Suraaj Padyatra

Kishor initiated the Jan Suraaj campaign with a padyatra across every district of Bihar on 2 October 2022. During this tour, Kishor and his team are engaging with local communities, aiming to establish grassroots connections and gather insights for policy formulation.[13][14] The campaign has three stated goals:

  1. To identify the right individuals at the grassroot level with the help of society and offer them a democratic platform.
  2. To better understand local problems and opportunities, and based on this, to list the priorities of towns and panchayats, and create a blueprint for their development.
  3. To prepare a vision document for the next 15 years based on suggestions from experts and the community in ten important areas for Bihar's overall development, including education, health, employment, economic development, agriculture, industry, and social justice.
