Ambiguous and Confusing

I never have liked the idea of rendering pronunciation in the alien and excessively complex format of a "phonetic alphabet." Rather than making the pronunciation universally accessible, it more often seems to render it universally obscure to most everyone other than linguists and phoneticists. It seems like simply giving some common-word examples would be simpler and more immediately intelligible.

This chart is a case in point. For example, as I read it, the question mark ( ? ) has been assigned at least 6 separate and distinct functions:

    ? = the 'u' in 'nut'
    ? = the 'a' in 'sofa'
    ? = the 'e' in 'bed'
    ? = "a catch in the throat"
    ? = indicates a stressed syllable
    ? = modifies the sound of 'a','e','i','o','u'

This is supposed to make pronunciation obvious? How is one to know which of the six meanings is intended in a given unfamiliar word? Wouldn't it make more sense to use six -different- symbols?

Of course as more and more symbols become necessary, one is going to come up against limits of what can be rendered in ASCII. So it would make even -more- sense to simply give an example, e.g.:

Hawaiians pronounce Ks as Ts?

Semi-protected edit request on 17 February 2014

Can I please edit this page because it needs a lot of editing. For example Kamehameha means "the lonely one" and on that page it says it means "sky" just because they both have a 'k' in the word. Tiger139 (talk) 01:42, 17 February 2014 (UTC)

The protecting admin is no longer an admin. Also, 'sky' isn't a translation of Kamehameha; this is a pronunciation guide. It's meant to say that the the 'k' in Kamehameha is pronounced like the 'k' in 'sky' (in bold). — Lfdder (talk) 02:09, 17 February 2014 (UTC)
