Professor Dr. Han Woo Park (Korean: 박한우) is a Korean academic and Professor at the Department of Media and Communications, Yeungnam University.[1] He is one of South Korea's most highly cited social science scholars.[2] He is recognized as a pioneer in Webometrics and an expert on Internet activism in South Korea.[3][4] His research mainly focuses on online media and biggish data in academic, governmental, and business communications.[5] He is currently Editor in Chief of Quality & Quantity and the Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asia.[6]
With an inspiring academic journey spans over two decades, Professor Han Woo Park has paved his position in academia as a leading researcher in the fields of Media & Communication, Information & Library Sciences, Science Studies and Social Sciences in general. Currently working as an eminent faculty member of Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs of Digital Convergence Business, East Asian Cultural Studies and Department of Media and Communication, Yeungnam University in South Korea[7]. He is also the founder of Cyber Emotions Research Center (CERC) and head of research lab - Big Local Big Pulse[7].
Professor Park’s contribution not only limited to only his academic domain but also spans over diverse fields from Information Technology (IT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Network analysis to Big Data Analysis, garnered him among the world’s top 2% scholars in 2024 by Elsevier[8][9] — a testament to his dedication, expertise, intellectual curiosity, enduring commitment to academic excellence and far-reaching impact on the academic community.
Education and Career
editAfter graduating from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, he completed his Post-graduation from Seoul National University, South Korea and Doctoral from State University of New York at Buffalo, USA[10]. Later he joined the Royal Academy of the Netherlands and the Oxford Internet Institute, UK, where he become a pioneer in Network Science of Open and Big Data in the early 2000’s, often referred as Webometrics, Hyperlink Network Analysis, Social Media Analysis, etc[10]. His foundational publication on Hyperlink Network Analysis was chosen as one of the most influential pieces published in INSNA (International Network for Social Network Analysis) Connections[11] [12].
Recognized as an authority in Big Data Networks, Dr. Park was elected as International Communication Association (ICA)’s Distinguished Fellow in 2023[10]. He is the fourth person in Korea to elected as an ICA Fellow and the first in local universities[10]. He is also the founder of World Association for Triple Helix & Future Strategy Studies (WATEF) [13], which consists of experts in the global Big Data field, to systematically analyze various information consumed on the Internet[7].
Professor Park has been co-awarded for the best paper in EPI-SCImago in 2016[14] and included in the list of core-candidates of the Derek de Solla Price Memorial Medal since 2017[15]. He was named by the Publons as top 1% peer reviewer consecutively, in 2018 and 2019[16] and in 2021, he was ranked as top scientist in Computer Science & Electronics field by Guide2Research[17]. In addition to hundreds of SSCI academic journals, he co-authored more than 10 books. According to Research.com, he came in first in Korea for Social Sciences and Humanities Scientists consecutively since 2022 to 2024[18].
Additionally, Professor Park is a Editor-In-Chief of Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asia[19], Quality & Quantity[20], ROSA Journal (the first peer-reviewed journal on Web3)[21], and founder of the Data, Innovation, Social networks, Convergence (DISC) International Conference[22].

editWithin the Information & Library Sciences category, Professor Park ranked 54th (including all citations) and 56th when self-citations are excluded, among a total of 14,509 scholars in 2024[8][9].
