Yossi Shavit is an Israeli sociologist and Professor Emeritus at Tel Aviv University.[1] He is recognized for his work in the fields of educational and social stratification and ethnic relations. His research examines the relationships between family structure, early childhood education, and later academic outcomes.

His current studies focus on social interactions between Arab and Jewish students in mixed schools in Israel, as well as the impact of family background and early educational experiences on later scholastic achievements.

Shavit holds several notable positions in sociological associations. He is currently the Vice President of the Research Committee on Social Stratification and Mobility (RC28) of the International Sociological Association and is a foreign member of both the National Academy of Education[2] and the Sociological Research Association.[3] In the past, he served as the President of RC28[4] and the Israeli Sociological Society. He also held a professorship at the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute in Florence.

Shavit is involved in policy-related research. He is a Principal Researcher at the Taub Center for Social Policy Studies in Israel, where he directs the Initiative on Early Childhood Research, focusing on policies that influence early childhood development and their long-term educational effects.[5]
