Texas A&M Women’s Chorus
editThe Texas A&M Women’s Chorus is a collegiate women’s choir group at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. Established in 1979, Women’s Chorus is the youngest of three choirs in the Texas A&M University Department of Music Activities.[1] The choir is currently directed by Thomas Gerber, who also conducts the Texas A&M University Century Singers.[2] Membership in Women’s Chorus counts for one credit hour per semester, and rehearsals are held up to four days a week. Membership numbers vary greatly by year, ranging from 50-100+ members.
History
editTexas A&M University was originally founded as an all-male military academy and did not admit women or non-Corps of Cadets members until the 1960s.[3] The Texas A&M Women’s Chorus was established in 1979 by Patricia Fleitas, an accomplished choral director who later joined the faculty at Florida Atlantic University.[4] Dr. Fleitas played a pivotal role in diversifying the university’s musical programs and fostering inclusivity by founding the Women’s Chorus and other choral initiatives. The creation of the Women’s Chorus was instrumental in showcasing female vocal talent at the university, which had historically been underrepresented.
Over the years, the Women’s Chorus has become a prominent fixture within the university’s musical community. The ensemble performs regularly on campus and participates in annual tours to cities across Texas, such as Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Austin. These tours highlight Texas A&M University’s commitment to arts outreach and serve as a platform to showcase the choir’s exceptional talent.KBTX. [5]
Musical Repertoire and Performances
editThe Texas A&M Women’s Chorus performs a diverse range of musical styles, focusing primarily on contemporary classical music and traditional choral music repertoire. Their performances also include college alma mater songs, such as The Spirit of Aggieland which is often featured at the start of their concerts. This blend of traditional and contemporary music allows the ensemble to appeal to both academic and general audiences.
In addition to live concerts on campus, the Women’s Chorus uses social media platforms to live stream their performances, enabling audiences worldwide to enjoy their music. These digital initiatives reflect the group’s commitment to embracing modern technology while honoring their classical roots.
The Women’s Chorus also engages in yearly Christmas caroling and hosts a Christmas concert for the local community, spreading holiday cheer and fostering a connection between the university and the College Station area.[6] In April 2023, the ensemble celebrated another successful year with their "Sounds Around the World" performance, which showcased their dedication to global musical traditions.
Activities and Community Engagement
editBeyond their performances, the Women’s Chorus contributes to the cultural life of Texas A&M University through collaborations with other student organizations and local community groups. They host and participate in workshops, joint concerts, and events aimed at promoting choral music and fostering camaraderie among university choirs.
The choir also provides its members with opportunities for personal and musical growth, fostering leadership, teamwork, and artistic expression. Membership is open to all women students at Texas A&M University, regardless of their academic background or major, encouraging inclusivity and diversity within the group. [7]
