Career

edit

Shafiq Mahmud Pinto is a senior advocate of Bangladesh Supreme Court [4][5] since 1987[6]. Pinto was Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Lawyer during the trials of the  2004 grenade attack in Dhaka[7]. The attack took place on 21st August, 2004[8] in Dhaka at anti-terrorism rally organized by Awami league in Bangabandhu Avenue. More than 500 were injured and 24 were killed after the attack[9]. Pinto has also served as the Secretary for Awami League Law committee in 2011. He was also a member of Awami League Central Working Committee.

Pinto has been the director and vice president[10] of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industries, also known as FBCCI[11]. He is the Chairman of the Bangladeshi construction firm Agro International and Consultants Ltd, since 1985[12]. He was also a shareholder in NCC Bank. He was the Awami League President of Ramganj Upazila, Laxmipur district, representing Laxmipur-1 constituency[13], from 2017 to 2024[14].

Pinto has also served as the Vice President of Dhanmondi Awami League and the President of Laxmipur Awami League. He was also the President of Bangladesh association of Construction Industry (BACI)[15][16]. He has attended the 2014 United Nations General Assembly as a part of the Bangladeshi Delegation[17]. He is also a member of Bangladesh Bar association[18].

After Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled Bangladesh and the Awami League goverment fell, and Pinto resigned from the party. A case was filed against him [19]in a Court in Bangladesh in September, 2024 following allegations of corruption but the case was shortly withdrawn. Pinto claims that the allegations against him were false and the case was deliberately filed against him because of his ties with Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
