Raghuram Iyer is a veteran sports management professional and administrator. He is currently the CEO of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).[1]. Iyer has worked across sporting disciplines as the former CEO of RPSG Sports[2]. He launched the sports vertical of the RPSG Group in 2016 and held key leadership positions in franchises owned by the group including IPL teams Rising Pune Super Giants and Lucknow Super Giants in cricket, ATK Mohun Bagan in the India Super League (ISL) in and the RPSG Mavericks team in Ultimate Table Tennis League. He has also served as the CEO of IPL side Rajasthan Royals[3].

editIyer holds a post-graduate management degree from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai.[4] He earned an undergraduate degree in B.A Honours in Economics from SRCC, Delhi University.

Rajasthan Royals
editIyer's transition to sports management happened in 2007 when he was appointed CEO of IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals[6]. He had been a part of the franchise since its inception and was a member of the founding management team which won the bid for the Jaipur IPL team[7]. Rajasthan Royals would go on to win the IPL in its inaugural season.
RPSG Sports
editIn 2016, Iyer moved to RP-Sanjeev Goenka Group's sports business RPSG Sports where he was appointed as CEO. Group Chairman Sanjeev Goenka announced Iyer would manage all of the Group's interests in sports across cricket, football and table-tennis.[8] He also served as CEO of the group's Pune-based IPL franchise Rising Pune Supergiant as well as Lucknow Super Giants.[9] During his tenure with RPSG Sports he also led the Group's football team ATK Mohun Bagan which competes in the ISL as well as the table-tennis franchise RPSG Mavericks.[10]
Indian Olympic Association (IOA)
editThe Indian Olympic Association (IOA) appointed Iyer as CEO on 5 January, 2024. According to a statement by the Association, Iyer was selected unanimously for the post by the IOA Nomination Committee after thorough interviews and careful consideration of the shortlisted candidates.[11] However, in February, his appointment became a bone of contention between IOA President PT Usha and its Executive Council. At least 10 of the 15 Executive Council members signed on a suspension order of Iyer as CEO and termed his appointment "null and void". Usha continued to back Iyer's appointment.
In September, the stalemate continued as 12 of the 15 EC members voted against the ratification of Iyer as CEO at a meeting that was chaired by IOA President PT Usha and also included IOC Director Jeromy Poivet as a special invitee.[12]
The Council members had raised strong objection to Iyer's pay package of approximately Rs 3 crore annually[13]. In a letter in October 3, the EC also stated they want to advertise the position afresh and the process of the appointment of CEO be reinitiated with new terms of reference.[14]
