Peter W. Lord is an American diplomat who is the nominee to serve as the United States ambassador to Senegal and the United States ambassador to Guinea-Bissau.

Early life and education

A native of Florida, he holds a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and French literature from Furman University and a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.[1]

Career

Lord is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Counselor. He has served as deputy chief of mission at the U.S. embassy in Windhoek, Namibia and the U.S. Mission to the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia as well as the director of the Office of Southern African Affairs, deputy director of the Office of East African Affairs, and deputy political counselor at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. Other diplomatic postings include Malawi, Syria, Iraq, and the United Kingdom.[1] Since October 2021, Lord has served as the deputy assistant secretary for East Africa, Sudan, and South Sudan in the Bureau of African Affairs at the Department of State.[2]

On March 14, 2024, President Joe Biden nominated Lord to serve as the next United States ambassador to Senegal and the United States ambassador to Guinea-Bissau.[3] His nomination is pending before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.[4] On June 13, 2024, a hearing on his nomination was held before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.[5]

Lord speaks French and some Arabic.[1]
