Oscar Hartland (born 2007) is a British actor and musician, best known for his portrayal of Neil the Baby in the BBC sitcom Gavin & Stacey. Hartland began his acting career at the age of one, appearing in the show since its debut in 2007. His character is the son of the central characters Neil "Smithy" Smith and Vanessa "Nessa" Jenkins. His character quickly became a fan favorite and has remained one of the most memorable aspects of the show.

Life and career

edit

Oscar Hartland was born in Machen, Wales in 2007. At six months old, his mother, Kirsty Pritchard-Hartland, submitted a photograph of him to Baby Cow Productions, leading to his casting as Neil the Baby in Gavin & Stacey.[1][2]

Growing up in Machen, Hartland developed an early interest in performing arts. His involvement in Gavin & Stacey marked the beginning of his acting career, where he portrayed Neil, the son of main characters Nessa and Smithy.

In addition to his acting career, Hartland has pursued music, performing as the frontman of the Welsh alt-indie band Redwood City.[3]

Despite being a child actor, Hartland's role was widely regarded as a key part of the show's success, and his performance earned attention from both viewers and critics. He was a consistent presence in the series, even as his character's interactions with the main cast became increasingly central to the show's plot.[4]

In December 2024, Hartland reprised his role as Neil in a highly anticipated Gavin & Stacey Christmas special, bringing his character back for a major storyline. The episode featured Neil delivering a rendition of The Beatles' song "Blackbird," demonstrating his growth both as an actor and a budding musician. The performance garnered significant attention, as it highlighted Hartland’s evolving career outside of acting.[5]

Gavin & Stacey

edit

Hartland made his debut as a child actor in 2009, at the age of two,[6] taking over the role of Neil Noel Edmund Smith, aka Neil, the Baby, during the third series of the BBC Three sitcom Gavin & Stacey. He appears in "Episode 2", which was broadcast on 3 December 2009, "Episode 4", which was broadcast on 17 December 2009, and "Episode 5", which was broadcast on Christmas Day 2009.[7] He appears in the BBC One "A Christmas Special", which was broadcast on Christmas Day 2019, where he appeared as an 11-year-old schoolboy. He appeared on the ITV breakfast television programme Good Morning Britain on 30 December 2019, promoting the special. He appeared as himself in the television film, We Love Gavin & Stacey, which was broadcast on 15 August 2020. He appears in "The Finale", which was broadcast on Christmas Day 2024, where he appeared as a 16-year-old apprentice, and later playing the guitar while singing "Blackbird" by the rock band The Beatles.[8]

The Voice Kids

edit

Hartland appeared on the seventh series of the ITV1 singing competition television series The Voice Kids.[9] He sang "My Hero" by the American rock band Foo Fighters, during the blind auditions on 1 July 2023, with three of the coaches, Ronan Keating, Pixie Lott, and Danny Jones, hitting their "I WANT YOU" button. He elected to join Danny's team.[10] He appeared on Carol Vorderman's BBC Radio Wales show on 8 July 2023, promoting his appearance.[11] He was eliminated during the battle on 15 July 2023, singing "Flowers" by the American singer, songwriter and actress Miley Cyrus.[12][13]

Hartland was a member of the alt-indie band, Redwood City. He quit the band in May 2024.[14]
