Li Shanghu (Chinese: 李尚湖师父; pinyin: Lǐ-Shànghú Shīfù) was a Chinese Indonesian teacher, Daoist, and Traditional Chinese medicine practitioner who founded the Daoist school of Thay Shang Men (Chinese: 太上门逍遥派; pinyin: Tàishàngmén-Xiāoyáopài) based in Indonesia.[1] He also invented and taught Daoyinshu (Chinese: 导引术; pinyin: Dǎoyǐnshù), a series of self-cultivation techniques involving a series of arm and body movements, meditation, and breathing practices.[2] After his passing, he was later deified by his followers as "The Supreme Deity of Virtue" (Chinese: 道德世尊; pinyin: Dàodé-Shìzūn).[3] On the 9th day of the first lunar month, his first appearance as a deity is celebrated.[4]
Early life
editLi was born in 1932 in Malang, Indonesia during the occupation of Dutch East Indies.[1] His legal name was Lie Song Hoo, a romanization of his Chinese name 李尚湖 (Pinyin: Lǐ Shànghú) before the Pinyin romanization system was invented. He was born in a small village of Sumberpucung during times of Dutch colonialism. Together with his family, they migrated back to China during Li's childhood.[1] During these years, Li had the opportunity to learn about Daoism and be fluent in Mandarin Chinese.[1] He started to learn about Traditional Chinese medicine when he came back to his homeland in Indonesia.[1]
In 1955 he married Lie Shimu. They had four sons, one of which would later be his successor in leading the school of Thay Shang Men.[5] However, during these times, Thay Shang Men hasn't been established yet.
