The film is again directed by Chad Stahelski, and it is being produced by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee. Starring Keanu Reeves returning as the title character, the film is produced by Thunder Road Pictures and 87North Productions.

History
editDevelopment
editA fifth John Wick film was originally intended to be shot back-to-back with the previous installment, John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023),[1][2] as announced by Lionsgate in August 2020.[3] However, after the COVID-19 pandemic affected the production schedule of Chapter 4, the fifth film was no longer being planned to be filmed back-to-back by March 2021.[4] The story of Chapter 4 was reworked as a conclusion of the series, ending with the apparent death of Keanu Reeves' protagonist John Wick. Lionsgate was skeptical of this decision but eventually acquiesced. Although director Chad Stahelski and Reeves initially affirmed that Wick was indeed dead,[5][6] Stahelski later stated that the ending was intentionally left ambiguous and open to interpretation.[7][8][9] Lionsgate president Joe Drake stated that a fifth film was now back in contention due to Chapter 4's "astonishing" box office,[10] while Stahelski stated he was open to a sequel.[11][12]
Writing
editIn May 2023, Drake confirmed to investors that a fifth film was in development, with the script being written at the conclusion of the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike.[13]
