The Institute for Particle Physics Phenomenology (IPPP) was established in 2000[1] as a joint-venture between the then UK PPARC (now STFC) and the University of Durham and is the UK’s national centre for particle phenomenology. It is housed in the Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics, which also includes the Institute for Computational Cosmology (ICC) at Durham University Mountjoy area.
History
editThe research group consisting of academic members, computer systems managers, administrative support staff, postdoctoral research associates and postgraduate students has continued to grow since its formation in 2000. Activities
editAs a group within the University of Durham Department of Physics the academic members of the IPPP teach undergraduate and train postgraduate students.
As a research group funded by STFC the academic members of the IPPP and the post-doctoral research associates engage in research projects focusing on particle physics phenomenology, which is at the boundary of pure theory and particle physics experiment. Much of the research directed at the IPPP is relevant for the interpretation of data from experiments at CERN and Fermilab. The IPPP supports much of the development of e.g. event generators.
The IPPP also organises and hosts many international workshops and conferences, thereby allowing easier access to these for UK-based researchers.
Research Facilities
editThe research facilities housed at the IPPP include both GPU and high-memory CPU based computing, and the IPPP houses a high-throughput computer cluster contributing to the UK's GridPP WLCG computing efforts as well as supporting the research activities at the institute.
The IPPP is home to the HEPData[2] data curation project run in collaboration with CERN.
