Illapa Sairitupac is an American activist, social worker and 2022 New York State Assembly candidate from Lower Manhattan.[2][3]
Career
editSairitupac's political career began with his work as a community organizer, where he focused on addressing the needs of marginalized communities. His commitment to social justice and progressive policies led him to run for the New York State Assembly in 2022, aiming to represent the interests of his community.[4][5] During his bid for a seat on the assembly, Sairitupac received the endorsement of both Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Democratic Socialists of America.[6][2] Sairitupac is a socialist.[3] As a candidate, he was a vocal advocate for ecosocialism, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the climate crisis and transitioning to renewable energy. He also placed heavy emphasis on labor rights, affordable housing, and healthcare reform, positioning himself as a rising progressive voice in New York politics. Sairitupac is actively involved in community service efforts and has vocalized his hopes to bridge cultural divides in Lower Manhattan.[7] He has been actively involved in initiatives aimed at empowering underrepresented groups and promoting social cohesion. Sairitupac is an organizer with Cooper Square Committee, a tenant rights nonprofit in New York City.[8][9]
Personal life
editSairitupac was raised in Upstate New York, having lived in several different towns in his childhood. He is openly gay and non-binary.[10]
