Production
editDevelopment
editIn June 2022, HBO Max renewed the series for a third season. The season consists of nine episodes, an increase from the second season, but decrease from the first.[1] In September 2022, the showrunners revealed that a time jump would take place between the second and third season.[2]
Casting
editMegan Stalter and Paul W. Downs were promoted to series regulars in the third season after having recurring roles since the first season.[3] In February 2024, it was announced Helen Hunt, Christina Hendricks, Christopher Lloyd, Dan Bucatinsky, George Wallace and Tony Goldwyn would guest star in the third season.[4] In March and April 2024, Aristotle Athari and J. Smith-Cameron were respectively announced to guest star in the third season.[5][6]
Writing
editFilming
editProduction began for the season in November 2022, but paused near the end of February 2023 for a few weeks before resuming in March due to lead actress Jean Smart recovering from a "successful heart procedure".[7][8] Production shut down in May 2023 due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike.[9]
Release
editIn March 2024, Max confirmed that the third season would premiere on May 2, 2024, with two episodes released weekly until its season finale on May 30.[10]
Reception
editCritical response
editThe third season received an approval rating of 98% based on 43 critic reviews on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 8.9/10. The website's critics consensus states, "Reuniting never felt so good – Hacks roars back with a fresh set and a persuasive argument for its own longevity."[11] Metacritic calculated a weighted average score of 90 out of 100 based on 22 critics.[12]
