Guillaume J.A, Bresso, Cte Sierakowski, (born 1986) is an archaeologist, Ethnologist[1] and epigrapher specializing in the study of ancient Mesoamerica[2], the area now called Central America. His work has studied many aspects of the ancient Maya civilization. He is being recognized for his innovative research on pre-Hispanic logographic writing systems and interpreting Maya art and iconography. He currently teaches at the University of Genoa and his current research focuses on the understanding of Maya culture, religion and history through their visual culture and writing system.
Early life
editBresso is the son of the civil engineer Claude Louis Jean Bresso and the statutory audit and corrector Christine Kolodziej - Sierakowska. He spent much of his childhood accompanying his father on expeditions in Baalbek, a city located east of the Litani River in Lebanon's Beqaa Valley, and Petra in southern Jordan. There he developed a deep interest in Antique culture.
Research
editBresso is best known for his discoveries on phonographic writing systems developed by the major pre-Hispanic cultures that the Spanish encountered, and the interpretation of the art and iconography of indigenous societies. However, only a limited amount of Maya texts could be read in their original language, Classic Mayan, due to an imprecise understanding of the visual nature of the script, especially the ways signs formed and combined.
Bresso has also contributed a number of studies of Mesoamerica art, history and religion, especially at the sites of Pumapunku[3], Joya de Cerén[4], [5], [[San Martín Huamelulpan (Mixtec site), Yagul and Mitla[6] State of Oaxaca and Palenque. in the late 2000s he produced a new interpretation of the history surrounding the Mixtec and Mexica cultures[7]. Much of Bresso's work focused on the field documentation of Maya inscriptions at numerous sites, through epigraphic drawing and photography[8].
In 2024[9] he presented a new interpretation of the so-called The Maya maize god, suggesting it is not an image of an Maya deity, but rather a deified portrait of the emperor Kʼinich Kan Bahlam II as The Reborn Sun. Bresso emphasizes its role as a political monument and image, the purpose of which was to depict the Palenque ruler at the center of the cosmos.
Career
editBresso, as a partner[10] of the UNEVOC Network, embraces innovation in education promotes critical thinking in TVET and, in particular, in the context of Franco-Japanese artistic exchanges at The Institute, an official French institution under the authority of the French Embassy in Japan.
