Green Ribbon Policing is a campaign that aims to get a better standard of mental health support for UK police officers. Green Ribbon Policing was founded in 2019 by ex Hertfordshire Constabulary Police Officer Sam Smith. The campaign is calling for the UK Government to create legislation for a mandatory national standard for police officer mental health support and provisions. Sam Smith found out that 1 in 5 police officers were estimated to have post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after reading a report published by Police Care UK, titled "The job - The Life"[1]
Green Ribbon Policing has been mentioned in UK Parliament on several occasions including in an adjournment debate given by Conservative MP Greg Smith which is published on Hansard[2]
Sam Smith also contributes and advises on the Police Covenant Consultation Group[3] in support of improvements to police officer mental heath provisions.
Green Ribbon policing has also featured on various different media outlets including GB News and Policing TV. On behalf of Green Ribbon Policing, MP John Redwood had written to MP Chris Philp who at the time served as the Policing Minister requesting that legislation was made to improve mental health in policing, Philp responded claiming he was powerless. This was picked up by GB News and an article written by Ray Addison was published in May 2024 criticizing Philp for not knowing the powers he held in government[4]
