The Gezira campaign or the Gezira offensive is an ongoing battle for control of the state of Gezira that has been ongoing since December 14.[6]
Background
editOn 15 April 2023, tension between the Rapid Support Forces, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commonly referred to as Hemedti, and the Sudanese Armed Forces, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, escalated into a war.
Timeline
editDecember 2023
editOn 14 December 2023, the RSF launched a raid in Gezira state for the first time, effectively capturing the Abu Guta village.[7] A day after, the RSF launched an offensive on Wad Madani, led by Abu Aqla Kikil, which lasted with little resistance until full RSF control by 18 December 2023.[8]
On 23 December 2024, The RSF launched an incursion for the first time in Sennar State, taking control of the Sennar Sugar Factory. A day later SAF launched airstrikes on the factory.[9]
On 30 December 2024, RSF had offered villagers protection in exchange to join the force.[10]
January 2024
editOn the first week of January, the SAF launched airstrikes which killed 11 people.[11]
On 14 January 2024, the SAF launched an offensive on El-Buweida in Eastern Gezira and outskirts of El-Fao.[12]
March 2024
editBy 5 March 2024, RSF was reported to have taken control of Medina Arab, advancing to Al-Manaqil, a major city in Gezira still under SAF control.[13]
On 15 March 2024, the RSF killed 8 people and injured 9 others in Hasaheisa.
April 2024
editFrom 5-7 April 2024, the SAF launched an offensive recapturing eastern villages and Medina Arab[14]
May 2024
editAn RSF attack on the 5th led to 15 people killed in the El Harga Noureddin village and several more were injured.[15]
On 21 May 2024, the RSF launched violent attacks on the Takina area which killed 18 people.[16]
June 2024
editOn 5 June 2024, the RSF committed a violent massacre in Wad al-Nora, which killed between 150-200.[17]
August 2024
editOn the 1st of August, the RSF attacked the El-Adnab village, which killed 30 people and wounded 14.[18]
By 10 August, the SAF repelled separate assaults on the Wad Faqisa boundary between Gezira and Qadarif state.[19]
On 16 August, 20 people were killed in an RSF attack in El-Majma Goz El-Naga[20]
September 2024
editOn 19 September, the SAF recaptured the Al-Shayqab village, 12 kilometers from Wad Madani and repelled an RSF counterattack. The RSF was accused of killing 40 people in Qoz Al-Naqa and four others in Um-Jalud.[21][22]
October 2024
editOn 7 October, the SAF killed 100+ people in an airstrike on the Fur Market of Hasaheisa.[23]
Six people were killed on the 11th in Umm Maliha during an RSF raid.[24]
On 18 October, General Abu Aqla Kikil defected to the Sudanese army with his forces as well, effectively giving control of his areas to the SAF.[25]
On 20 October, the RSF started brutal massacres in east Gezira in response to Abu Aqla Kikil's defection.
On 21 October, the SAF killed 30 people in an airstrike on a mosque in Wad Madani.[26]
November 2024
editOn 16 November, a new armed group called the Jazeera Liberation Movement led by Al-Sadiq Adam Omer that is in support of the Sudanese Army. The movement was formed in order to stop the RSF in Gezira state for continuing its offensive and massacres.[27]
