Christian Pierre Laret (French: [kʁis.tjɑ̃ pjɛʁ la.ʁɛ]; 1935-2024) was a painter, sculptor and photographer.
Early Life and education
editLaret was born in Boulogne-Billancourt in 1935 as the only child of factory workers, André Léonard Laret and Elisabeth Marie Launay. In 1940, Laret moved to La Ville-aux-Clercs to stay with relatives during the World War II while his parents stayed in the city. After the war he returned to Boulogne-Billancourt and finished secondary school. In his free time Laret and his father would walk around Paris to paint cathedrals.
At the age of 18 Laret was accepted into the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris. Where he would stay the next 4 years, some practice work has survived.[1]
Career

After succesfully finishing the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in 1957, Laret moved to Felletin (near Aubusson, Creuse) to work on tapestry.[2][3][4][5]
Algeria
editIn 1959 Laret conscripted to participate in the French Military in Oran. Because of his background he fulfilled cartographer duties. Some collages from this period using maps of Algeria have survived.
Amsterdam
editAfter returning from Algeria 1962, Laret moved to Amsterdam, the living place of his spouse. This marks a period of professional photography.[6][7][8] Towards the 1990s, Laret focussed more on painting, collages and sculptures. The main themes durings his life are are water and cathedrales. His work often found expositions in North-Holland.[9][10][11]
Death
editOn the 29th of May 2024, Christian Laret died in the hospital of complications of a surgery that was performed 12 days prior.
