Career
editCo-founding Unity Technologies
editIn 2004, Helgason co-founded Unity Technologies alongside Nicholas Francis and Joachim Ante.[3] The company was established with the aim of creating a powerful yet accessible game engine. Unity Technologies launched its first version of the Unity game engine in 2005, targeting the rapidly growing market of indie game developers and smaller studios. The engine was designed to simplify the development process while providing high-quality tools for game creation. Unity gained significant traction due to its cross-platform capabilities, enabling developers to deploy games on multiple devices, including consoles, personal computers, and mobile platforms.
CEO role and leadership
editHelgason served as the CEO of Unity Technologies from the company’s inception until 2014.[1] During his tenure, Unity transitioned from a small startup into a major player in the game development industry.[4] The engine became particularly popular for its accessibility, enabling both large studios and independent developers to create games. Unity’s focus on affordability and ease of use helped position it as one of the most widely adopted game development platforms.[4]
Under Helgason’s leadership, Unity also expanded its focus beyond gaming into other interactive industries, including augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).[5] The company’s emphasis on innovation and creating tools for diverse media applications contributed to the widespread adoption of Unity technology in various fields, from architecture to automotive design.
Post-CEO role
editIn 2014, Helgason stepped down from his position as CEO and took on an advisory role within Unity Technologies. His leadership was succeeded by John Riccitiello,[6][7] former CEO of Electronic Arts.[8] Helgason continued to contribute to Unity's strategic vision and development in his advisory capacity.
Entrepreneurship and philanthropy
editAfter his time at Unity, Helgason has been involved in various technology ventures and initiatives, including investments and startups.[9] Helgason has also invested in climate focused startups.[10]
Legacy
editUnder Hegason's leadership, Unity Technologies helped democratize game development by providing accessible tools for developers of all skill levels.[11] The Unity engine continues to be one of the most popular and widely used platforms for creating games and interactive media.[12]
