Background and composition
edit
The song was released on 15 June 2021.[ 9] "Chaise Longue" has been described as a tongue-in-cheek[ 1] [ 4] post-punk song.[ 1] [ 2] The track starts with a minimalistic drum beat and bass line, with the vocals sung in a deadpan style and a guitar joining in later in the song.[ 2] [ 10] The lyric "Is your muffin buttered?/Would you like us to assign someone to butter your muffin?" is a direct quotation from the 2004 teen comedy Mean Girls .[ 11]
It was written in 2019[ 12] in a single day by vocalist Rhian Teasdale while she was sitting on an actual chaise longue owned by guitarist Hester Chambers's grandfather.[ 4] A music video, also directed by Teasdale, was released on the same day as the release of the single.[ 6]
