edit- Books vs Novels
What's supposed to be the difference between his category, and the catagory:Series of fantasy novels? - —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 192.223.226.5 (talk • contribs) 04:45, 23 December 2006.
- Not all books are novels, e.g. books of short stories. However, most or perhaps all of the book series in this category should be moved down to the sub-category for Novels. After that, if there are no fantasy book series which are not novels, then this category should be nominated for deletion.
- Series of books vs Books by series
- But before we get into that, let's merge this Category:Series of fantasy books into Category:Fantasy books by series, and Category:Series of fantasy books into Category:Fantasy novels by series. Fayenatic london 13:51, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
Merger completed
editCategory:Series of fantasy books was merged into this category on 14 Jan 2007. See this link for discussion.
- Category name
- The merger was a good idea, but the wrong title was retained. "Fantasy books by series" is, obviously, a good name for a category containing books. "Series of fantasy books" is, obviously, a good name for a category containing series. This category is misnamed. Wareh 21:00, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
- I agree that the page name is poor. Although its preface may poorly describe the facts, the category does actually contain both categories that comprise books by series (one sort of book category) and pages that are series articles, neither of the old category names is good. --P64 (talk) 21:54, 9 December 2012 (UTC)
2012-12-09, beside responding to the 5-year-old talk above this line, I have inserted three bold headings. -P64
Clarification of category membership
edit[The preface of this page] Category:Fantasy books by series states that "Fantasy series of books which are not novels, e.g. short stories, should be categorized in the parent category Category:Fantasy books by series". This distinction isn't entirely clear in the Category:Fantasy books by series text, so I'm taking the liberty of clarifying it. Unfortunately, many, if not most of the members of Category:Fantasy books by series are miscategorized and should be recategorized to Category:Fantasy novel series. The only things that belong in Category:Fantasy books by series are child categories such as Category:Fantasy novel series and fantasy series with non-novel members such as Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser series (which contains some short story collections). --67.169.100.237 (talk) 05:04, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
- This and related categories suffer from confusing two confusions. The confused (partly- and sometimes wrongly-implemented) distinction between novels and other books is confused with the confused (partly- and sometimes wrongly-implemented) distinction between fantasies and books.
- Perhaps there are three dimensions. One may contrast Fantasy books by series with
- Fantasy novel series, a child comprising sets of books that happen to comprise novels only (isn't that silly?)), or
- Fantasy series, which should comprise series articles (The Chronicles of Narnia rather than books categories The Chronicles of Narnia books, or
- perhaps Fantasy books by fictional universe, which might be a parent where some universes set more than one series, some set a series of novels and a standalone series, etc.
