- For the purposes of this category, "Southern Africa" is defined in accordance with the World Geographical Scheme for Recording Plant Distributions (WGSRPD), namely as a region within the botanical continent of Africa that includes the following areas, typically defined by the political boundaries of its constituents:
- BOT – Botswana
- CPV – the Caprivi Strip (politically part of Namibia but recognized separately)
- LES – Lesotho
- NAM – Namibia excluding the Caprivi Strip
- South Africa
- CPP– Cape Provinces: Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and Western Cape
- NAT – KwaZulu-Natal
- OFS – Free State
- TVL – Northern Provinces: Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Northern Province (Limpopo) and North-West Province
- SWZ – Eswatini (Swaziland)
- South Africa as a whole is not recognized in the WGSRPD.
- Native taxa of the lowest rank are included if they occur widely in the region, otherwise they should be included in the lichens of one or more of the constituent areas. Higher taxa are included only if endemic.
