Reception
editThe novel was generally well received by critics. On the review aggregator website Book Marks, the novel received a "Rave" consensus based on a mix of 3 "positive" and 5 "rave" reviews by mainstream critics.[3] In a starred review, Kirkus Reviews called the novel "another provocative and page-turning entry in the Southern noir genre."[4] In another starred review, Publishers Weekly begins their assessment calling it "a superb thriller" and continues to say that "the hard-edged storytelling is supplemented by richly developed characters", that Cosby "elegantly layers his narrative over Virginia’s racial history, giving the proceedings uncommon emotional depth."[5]
Authors Chris Bohjalian, Ellery Adams, and Roxanne Gay praised the novel with 5-star reviews on Goodreads.[6][7][8] The novel was also nominated for the 2023 Goodreads Choice Awards for Mystery & Thriller.[9]
