Saturday
editSince I have to leave at 5-ish on Sunday, can I suggest organising a lunch on Saturday as well? Somewhere near the dinner location; people more involved in Raleigh will know a place, I'm sure. Ironholds (talk) 22:00, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
- How about Chipotle Mexican Grill? They have some awesome food, and its near the mall so that we could go waste some time until dinner. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 15:04, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
- Assuming Lara is up for giving me a lift, I Support this plan. That makes it 2/0/0 in my book. Ironholds (talk) 19:34, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
- I'm really struggling to muster up the give a fuck to leave my hotel room for Chipotle. I can't imagine why anyone would ever in a billion years fly from London to eat at a cheap Mexican grill. I mean, if you want Mexican food, I can find an authentic Mexican restaurant where $9 will get you a whole meal and not just a mediocre burrito the size of your head. Lara 22:19, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
- There are plenty of other things to do besides sit in your hotel room (I've been to the natural history museaum before, and it's worth the few bucks to get in), but you gotta eat, doncha? Would you prefer to eat somewhere else? Or you could just skip the lunch and do the dinner. It occurs to me that you've put a lot of work into starting to organize this meetup, and either way, I want to let you know that I appreciate the efforts. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 23:26, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
- I'm there for the whole weekend and I've got my plans set, but in planning this I've been trying to keep in mind that Ironholds is flying in from England, so I'm trying to pick places for him that really represent something (i.e. southern and/or American cuisine), and I want him to go back home and think "that was really great food."
- So, for example, now I'm looking for new places because Big Ed's (the Sunday lunch spot) is closed on Sundays. That was the spot for authentic southern food. :( I'm thinking 18 Seaboard in its place (Contemporary American). And Hayes Barton Dessertery cannot accommodate our numbers. Lara 23:45, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
- Bummer. Can we swap Big Ed's to Saturday lunch? There is less interest for Sunday, so the Dessertery might be able to cover that. I can think of a couple great southern cuisine places in Greenville, but thats a two-hour drive on a weekend. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 23:54, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
- If you guys are cool with switching lunch at Big Ed's to Saturday, that'd be cool. The Dessertery can only accommodate groups of eight. We've already got seven RSVPed and I have it on good authority that there may be three more. Looks like it's out. Lara 00:04, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
- I'm flexible enough that I really don't care where we eat, as long as I can afford it. :P The Dessertery sounded really good, though. Crabtree Valley Mall has a few restaurants that may work as well. I think that The Cheesecake Factory may match your intent, though it doesn't really evoke the same kind of persona because it's a chain. I've been to that specific one, and it's pretty good. It's a shame Raleigh isn't closer to the coast, there are a lot of great seafood places in New Bern. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 02:35, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

- Yea, but I won't be staying for the whole time between the two meals as you guys are talking about above. It's only three blocks away from the dinner venue, though. Lara 23:07, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Suggestions
edit42nd street oyster bar for dinner. Good sized place. I've had good food there. Big Eds for Saturday Lunch, and for Sunday lunch, may I recommend either The Pit in downtown Raleigh or Dixie Belles in Apex. Both have great Barbecue. I like Dixie Belles a bit better for Eastern Carolina style, but the Pit is more centrally located, and better regarded overall (featured on Food Network). What does anyone think? If you're gonna come to Carolina, you hafta get whole hog barbecue sometime! --Jayron32 02:30, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
- 42nd St is great, and The Pit certainly gets a lot of press, I'd like to try it out because I don't know any good barbecue places downtown, and out-of-state guests should definitely be treated to North Carolina barbecue. Apex is a little far afield for this informal gathering, I think. - Dank (push to talk) 13:40, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
- I second the barbecue motion. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 15:21, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
- I 15th the barbecue motion... wait whut? — Coffee // have a cup // ark // 21:02, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
- I updated the Sunday lunch to The Pit. 42nd is expensive, at least for poor people like me, of which there are several coming. :P What are thoughts on Raleigh Times Bar? In consideration of the conversation above, the lunch and dinner venues on Saturday should be close together. Lara 21:06, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
- I've never eaten at the Raleigh Times, so I have no opinion on their dinner fare. If we are looking for stuff that's near Big Eds, some other possible ideas are Tir Na Nog which is even closer than Raleigh Times, and I have eaten there a few times. Fun place, has that "Irish pub" atmospehere. Tit na nog is also next door to the pour house which may be interesting to some people if they want to hang out and see some live music. Tir na nog also often has live bands. Also very close to both Big Eds and Tir na nog is Rum Runners. The food is kinda 'eh', but its one of those "dueling piano bars" and is a really fun time for after dinner entertainment. Just some more ideas. Perhaps something like Tir Na Nog for dinner and Rum Runners for drinks and music afterwards? --Jayron32 21:19, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
- Speaking as the out-of-state visitor, I want to use my UN security council veto on everything involving the possibility of live music. Just me, though. Ironholds (talk) 21:57, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
- I'm with Ironholds on this one. I want to have good food (even if I have to pay a bit more), not "eh" food... because I'm expecting you schlubs to provide my entertainment for me, not a band.
- Another thought that occurs to me: the intent is to be an informal meal with wiki-friends, so if any of these suggestions involve me wearing a tie, you guys better be way more charming than you act here. And pretty. As far as I know, Lara is going to be the only lady, so the dudes have to make up for that by being funny.
- Lastly, I'm staying sober, so if anyone wants a ride and lives reasonably close, I'm willing to be a DD. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 22:11, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
- Hmwith is a lady. We're both (allegedly) pretty. Haha. None of these places should be formal. Casual dining ftw. I picked places off TripAdvisor.com. Raleigh Times Bar is ranked #13 out of 631 restaurants in Raleigh and has received a lot of good reviews. Tir Na Nog is #164 and the reviews aren't that great. I'm with the others than food > music. We want to be able to talk, so we should be our own entertainment. Lara 00:48, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
- You flatter yourself, Lara. I'd suggest the Raleigh Times Bar, and then a stop off at the opticians for Lara. Ironholds (talk) 02:13, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

- Alright, so it looks like the general consensus here is:
- Saturday Lunch at Big Eds
- Saturday Dinner at Raleigh Times
- Sunday Lunch at The Pit
- Shall we call this a go? --Jayron32 04:27, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
- Sure; unless there are problems we'll stick from that. Anyone tries to debate eateries again and you'll receive a Glasgow kiss from me on arrival :P. Ironholds (talk) 20:10, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
Final planning
editLuckily, the weather looks good. I gather that our reservations are still in order? Also, I wanted to bump this onto the front burner for those of you who have this page watchlisted. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 01:29, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
- Thunderbirds are go at my end, everything is dandy, I will be looking like a proper member of my profession and rearing to go! :). Ironholds (talk) 01:31, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
- I think everyone in the definitely coming sections are booked and ready to go. A lot of them have airline/hotel reservations, so I doubt they'll be backing out. Lara 13:12, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
- Wow, you guys have picked some GREAT places for the meetup! Big Ed's, The Times, and The Pit are three of my favorite places in the whole city. I'll have to talk to the fiancée later today and see if I/we will be able to make it to any of the meetups. Ioeth (talk contribs twinkle friendly) 15:24, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Saturday lunch
editBig Ed's is out completely. This place has great reviews, and from what I've read online and heard from people who live there, it would be great. Unfortunately, they not only didn't do lunch on Sundays, but they've stopped doing lunch on Saturdays too. Thus, we are in need of a new Saturday lunch venue here in the eleventh hour. It's been a PITA trying to find good eateries to accommodate a party of eight or more, as there are a lot of little college hot spot places that are little more than holes in the wall. So some help from locals would be appreciated. And quick! Thanks, Lara 14:39, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- You should to take a look at this list, which shows all of the restaurants right near Moore Square, which is where Big Ed's is located. My personal recommendations from that list:
- Jibarra - (Warehouse District, near The Pit) Haven't been here yet but I've heard nothing but rave reviews
- The Busy Bee Cafe - (Moore Square) An excellent place to get together and hang out
- Sitti - (Moore Square) Really good Lebanese food and would surely have the space we need, but was really loud the last time I was there
- Here's some other ideas that are a bit farther away but have great food:
- 518 West - (Glenwood South) One of the two best Italian restaurants in the city
- The Point - (5 Points) Excellent food overall and a rockin' brunch menu
- Lilly's Pizza - (5 Points) The pies they make here are fantastic
- The Rockford - (Glenwood South) Fantastic sandwiches, but might be too small depending on the group size
- Abyssinia - (Avent Ferry) Great Ethiopian cuisine if we want to go non-traditional
- I've got a meeting in a few minutes, but look over those and see if anything jumps out at you either from my list or the map. If you have questions about any of them, I'll come back and check here after I get done! Ioeth (talk contribs twinkle friendly) 15:19, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- I had considered Sitti when I was originally planning locations. One reason you may like Raleigh Times Bar, The Pit, and Sitti so much is because they're all owned by the same group. Might be nice to throw a cultural twist in there with the Lebanese cuisine. Lara 15:39, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- Gotta say, genuine or not, I'm not a big fan of Middle Eastern cuisine. Granted, Iraq is not normally considered an example of fine eating, but still. The steak sandwich at Busy Bee's has captured my attention, and thus, my vote. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 16:01, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- I'm good with The Busy Bee as well. Good food and a nice atmosphere. Oh, and good beer :-) Ioeth (talk contribs twinkle friendly) 16:44, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- Okay, booked a reservation at The Busy Bee for 8-10 people at 1pm Saturday. The other restaurants do not take reservations. From my impression, it shouldn't be a big deal for the dinner on Saturday at Raleigh times; however, The Pit apparently gets kickin' busy on Sundays, so we may end up waiting for a while to get a table. Lara 17:23, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- It should be no problem at the Times, even though they can get kinda busy on Saturday nights. If I'm able to make it to dinner that night (which I may not be able to due to family being in town) I should be able to ensure we would have no problem. If we have to wait at the Pit, it's no big deal....they have a very nice bar to hang out at right in the front of the restaurant :-) Ioeth (talk contribs twinkle friendly) 17:52, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- That sounds great, you're cool Lara! I will reiterate that I'm willing to offer a ride to those who imbibe too much. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 19:29, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

editI'm both pleased and disappointed to only now be reading my invite to this meetup! On March 1st, my close friend Gerry Reid was fatally injured and my world hasn't been quite the same since.
