It's OK - it's not supposed to be easy. Help:Templates#Parameters has the answer at the top. {{templatename|parname1=parvalue1|parname2=parvalue2}} and {{templatename|parvalue1|parvalue2}} are what you need. For example, {{tl}} produces {{[[Template:{{{1}}}|{{{1}}}]]}}, while {{tl|Hi}} makes {{Hi}}, and it will also work if I put {{tl|1=Hi}} (making {{Hi}} - no different).
