My major rewrite
editThe page says it's in need of major help from an expert so I jumped in and redid the section on cases and caselaw. Sorry if I stepped on anyone's toes.
I think there was a lot of stuff that needed to be changed.
The Napster case didn't deal with p2p file sharing; it was a central server. It was never finally adjudicated. Neither was the Kazaa case.
There was a lot of material that was opinion, but didn't relate to the legal issues. I just took it out since this section is supposed to be about the legal issues.
I have tons of additional material to add. Will have to think about how to organize it.
Two major questions I need input on are: should this section deal only with the substantive legal questions of what is and isn't copyright law, or should it also deal with the (a) procedural questions, and (b) counterclaims?

Candy Chan article
editI've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Candy Chan, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree, discuss the issues raised at Talk:Candy Chan. If you remove the {{dated prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. I fail to understand why the article was deleted. This was the first RIAA v. Consumer case where the defendant won!!! Also it had the unusual twist, that after the RIAA was forced to withdraw the case, it sued Candy Chan's 14 year old daughter.
- I know this answer is very late, but the reason for deletion was an uncontested Proposed deletion. If anyone thinks it shouldn't be deleted (including the article's author), it can be restored (or not deleted if it's contested within the 5-day period). So, if you think the article should be restored, just ask. In case it's useful, the rationale for this proposed deletion was "does not meet WP:BIO notability guidelines and only the Recording Industry Association of America article links to it. Does not provide significant detail beyond that already contained in the RIAA article". --cesarb 16:39, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
Nomination of Ray Beckerman for deletion
editThe article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ray Beckerman until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.
Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article until the discussion has finished.
The file File:Ray Beckerman.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Unused photo with no clear encyclopedic use
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Logan Talk Contributions 04:37, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
