Greek Disambiguation Help
Dear Russ, Thank you for suggesting the wrong link to disambiguation page. I have corrected the information. Thanks again, Cyril Thomas 12:15, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
leave ee3 alone
Leave EE3 alone. TBA must going somewhere for readers who may not know what it means.--The Negotiator 13:22, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- Okay, what Negotiator means is, Russbot is changing all the TBA links so they lead to the non-existent "To be determined" page, instead of the TBA disambiguation page. I don't know why you would have it do that,I think you should have a look at it.--Atlan 13:38, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- I will do so. --Russ (talk) 18:07, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- Why doesn't he respond himself? A simple acknowledgement of the problem would be polite.--The Negotiator 18:02, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- Since you asked so politely, and politeness apparently is so important to you, I'm delighted to acknowledge your message. Have a nice day. --Russ (talk) 18:07, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
Why revert?
Not two minutes after I edit the article, you remove it. Justification please? There is no direct reference to Claire Balding's sexuality. Being a lesbian isn't a crime, honey! 82.163.39.155 22:01, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- If you want to insert something in an article about a living person that might conceivably be construed as defamatory, you must provide verification for it. The same if you wanted to say she was straight. --Russ (talk) 22:03, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- Are you taking the piss? Please read the Claire Balding article again, it clearly says she is in a relationship with Alice Arnold. What does that tell you? Maybe she's in denial about being straight and decides to be a lesbian, for the attention?! Jeez. 82.163.39.155 22:05, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your comments. I will read the article with rapt interest. --Russ (talk) 22:08, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi R'n'B, this article looks Wikified to me. I noticed that you tagged it, so I wanted to see if you still think there is work needed on it, and that if the tag should go back on.--Wikipedier (talk ⢠contribs) 21:43, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- It still needs some work, but I don't think the {{wikify}} message is needed any more. --Russ (talk) 22:20, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
I might be able to make minor changes in the future, but you can feel free to make any changes that you think would be helpful aswell.--Wikipedier (talk ⢠contribs) 23:35, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Church on Brady - deletion
Hi, Thanks for your comments on the entry for Church on Brady. I would like to re-write this and remove the copyrited material. How do I get the orignal back to do this? âThe preceding unsigned comment was added by Countrysweet (talk ⢠contribs) 21:19, 30 March 2007 (UTC).
- I guess you could just copy it from the same website again. However, I don't understand why you can't just edit Mosaic Church, which appears to be about the same organization. --Russ (talk) 00:15, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Editing Current List of Disambiguation Pages w/ Links
The reason why I took pages off the list was because I had previously put notes beside those pages stating that they do not need to be on the list anymore because the only pages that linked to them were pages that disambiguated to them. However several weeks later they remained on the list, and I felt they need to be deleted from the list. If you want to know which pages they are I can provide them to you. --Willy No1lakersfan (Talk - Contribs) 22:37, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

what kind of brilliant bot is this?
hi - how did Russbot figure out that one doesn't diffuse a bomb, unless one is cutting it up into little pieces and scattering them in the wind? My hat is off to Russ. Bot. (And I'm still trying to figure out how I missed that one!) Tvoz |talk 01:59, 14 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks. As explained on User:RussBot, disambiguation is really a manual process. The bot just speeds up identifying the links and presenting alternatives, but I still have to read each article to understand the context. --Russ (talk) 12:16, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

mad bot
please note that United Kingdom and Britain are NOT synonyms, the former includes Northern Island, the latter doesn't, so changing the "the east coast of Britain" to the "the east coast of the United Kingdom" is nonsense. Thanks jimfbleak 17:05, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Russbot diff
Hello. Here is a Russbot diff: diff. Why did it add six semicolons? Is this a bug? Sorry if I'm posting this on the wrong page. Respond here, please. Thanks. ~a (user ⢠talk ⢠contribs) 20:58, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

On John McCowan
Dear R'n'B, thank you for your message. I hope I have appropriately removed the ambiguity to which you referred. Kind regards, --BF 18:25, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your interest in the article. I am not sure if I understand the message, however. I am being as specific as I can. Vasiukov was born in 1933 when the Soviet Union was in full swing, but he died in 2006 after it broke up in 1991. So, he could be referred to as a Soviet player, a Russian player, or perhaps both, for greater clarity. Maintenance, repair and operations
Hi R'n'B.
I'm trying to translate the article "Maintenance, repair and operations" and I saw that you edited it. Please tell me what means the expression "for the material" (it's in brackets) and in what sense the word material is used !!!
Please, it's very important for me!!!!

- I'll just answer here, thanks. I did edit that page, but only to change the word "Renovation" to "Refurbishment". I haven't had anything else to do with it! However, it looks like the section you are interested in is copied out of a Department of Defense specification having to do with telecommunications. As far as I can tell without consulting the original source, it seems to be referring to "material" as meaning any kind of physical component of a telecommunications system (could be anything from a circuit board in a switch to a piece of copper wire to a telephone set). --Russ (talk) 20:51, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
Your bot is twice wrong
He posted a message in my talk page sayign something like that I had included some disambiguation links or something like that in an edit I made when my edit just had one link, and it was a reference. In addition, I tryed to report the error and the page did not exist. Onofre Bouvila 21:32, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
- My apologies for the inconvenience. However, you did add text to a page that contains links to three disambiguation pages -- German, Spanish, and English. If you wanted to refer to the languages, you should have typed [[German language|German]], [[Spanish language|Spanish]], etc. --Russ (talk) 22:50, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Ambiguous link
Thank you for this lovely little note on my talkpage. I found the page completely un-wikified on New pages, and began the process of wikifying it the way I normally do - I go a section at a time and link anything I think should be linked, then save the page, then check each individual link and fix those that don't point where I want them to. In other words - I was well aware that a number of those probably linked to DAB pages and I'm working on it. And don't tell me that I should use preview - it's easier (for me at least) to do it the way I'm doing it. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 20:58, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Bot help
Russ I am very interested in how you developed your bot. I am exploring how I can use bots on an another wiki and would love to chat about lessons learned, best practices, and whatever else I need to start it out. I have read most of the information available on wikipedia about bots, but nothing seems to help me get the process started from someone who isn't really fluent in the languages commonly used for bots. I am a quick learner and I am a sysop and considered the top gardener on the wiki I am working on. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Please leave me a message via my talk page or wikiemail if you would be interested in helping me. Thanks for your time. immunity talk 23:24, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
DPL subpages
I saw that you've updated User:RussBot/DPL with data from the April dump, and I was wondering if it would be possible to use that dump to create new lists for Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links/from categories, Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links/from templates, and (though far from necessary) Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links/from portals. I'm basically done with the old category list now, but since the dumps used are all over a year old, it would be good to get a new infusion of data. Would you be willing to try it out? Dekimasuã! 06:07, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
- I already have User:RussBot/DPL/Templates which I have been working on (it was my first effort, and as you'll see the list came out backwards and the "top" item turned out to be a false positive, but it's a start). My list is sorted by the number of times the template is used on other pages, not the number of disambig pages linked on it, which I find more useful. I would have to write additional code to generate the other lists, so that won't happen at least until the next dump. --Russ (talk) 09:38, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the information, and sorry to load you down with coding requests. Do you have any opposition to edits to the templates page? I'll help out with links on the list there, if you're amenable to it. Dekimasuã! 03:36, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

- I'll start on that, then. I noticed that the old WP:MDP list is completed, too, if you'd like to move over the new one. Dekimasuã! 10:32, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
- I'm waiting for the next dump (probably a couple more weeks). The list from the 2007-04-02 dump contains a lot of pages that have been fixed since then, so it would be a waste of time to post it. --Russ (talk) 14:21, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Typo redirect CBL Data ecovery technologies
Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on CBL Data ecovery technologies, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because CBL Data ecovery technologies is a redirect page resulting from an implausible typo (CSD R3).
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting CBL Data ecovery technologies, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 20:37, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

New DPL
I (temporarily) fixed some of the worst offenders on your new DPL list (Ford (disambiguation), Witch (disambiguation), Reptile (disambiguation), and Canadian (disambiguation)) by changing some redirects (Ford, Witch, Reptilia, and Canadian). I changed Computer game into a redirect as well. Please let me know if you think any of those changes were unwarranted.
A few people at the main DPL page have been itching for a new list, and it appears to be good timing based on our discussion about switching lists at ~80% completion. Thanks for putting up the initial page, and for initializing the new one, when that happens. I hate bothering you all the time and being generally unhelpful. I hope you know how much your work is appreciated (and if you ever retired, the project would be done for). Dekimasuã! 10:12, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Issue with double redirect to category page
Thought I might let you know that I noticed this bot tried to fix a double redirect at List of articles with C programs, which is supposed to point at a category page. Instead it put the redirect in the category. I think I fixed it by putting a colon (:) at the start of the link. Vadmium 23:53, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
Hmm, it seems like it's all good. It just looks funny when you do a diff or a preview. Vadmium 23:57, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
- You did the right thing. The business of main namespace titles redirecting to categories is a problem that I need to work on. Fortunately, it's fairly rare. Thanks. --Russ (talk) 02:04, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nominations with RussBot
Hello! I've reverted these two speedy deletion requests you made (I have to assume) while running your bot in supervised mode. Please be careful when nominating pages for speedy deletions. First of all, it would be really nice if you could post a warning on the talk page of the creator when you do so. There's nothing more frustrating to a newbie than seeing that the page they created has dissapeared without knowing what happened. In the first case, the article Andrew Avellino was created by User:Polylerus, a well respected longtime Wikipedian. In fact, the only problem with the article is that it had been vandalized and a cursory look at the page's history shows that clearly. As for Technip, the article makes it abundantly clear that this is a well-known, well-established company of importance whose notability is unquestionable. It had been edited by a few users and has articles in the French and Finnish wikipedias. It had also been the recent target of vandalism, resulting in the nonsensical paragraph that probably led you to put up the {{db-spam}} template. It's not a great idea to have the bot account put up the speedy deletion requests because, well, nobody is too comfortable with a bot putting up such critical requests. It also means that you're putting up these after a cursory glance at the article without first checking the history or making preliminary research on the subject. If, while supervising your bot, you find problem pages, please consider adding them to a list which you'll check out later when you have enough time to do speedy-requests with care. Note that I'll leave this message both here and on the bot talk page. Pascal.Tesson 03:04, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for pointing out a valid problem and offering constructive suggestions. --Russ (talk) 03:08, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
Deleting content under construction
The article CIELAB is being re-written. Until its content is encyclopaedic, the redirect which had been there for quite some time should remain. Kindly refrain from deleting the contents, which are being written and edited. Thank you. Lovibond 21:30, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
Editing the DPL list
As an exception to not editing anything before the link to "links" on the current dump list, if a page is moved the way Final four (disambiguation) was moved to Final four, is there any reason not to edit the beginning of the line to link to the correct dab page, rather than noting it as "now at Foo (links)"? Most of the parenthetical-included titles on the page are wrong at the moment, and it would be quicker and easier to change them that way. Dekimasuã! 02:53, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
- I think you're right about that. --Russ (talk) 09:59, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks. Good to know I won't be breaking something. Dekimasuã! 13:26, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
Disambiguation pages.
Hi there, I'm from the Hebrew Wikipedia. I was told you have a bot that deals with disambiguation pages. I'm looking for a bot that can scan the 'special:disambiguation' page and copy it's content, disincluding pages with a certain template, and indicating the number of links pinting to each page. Can you help me? P.S. Since I'm not a member here, I would appreciate if you could respond on my talk page. Thanks.he:×שת×ש:ש×××××
- Thanks for the quick reply. Does the bot generate a wikipedia page or a regular text file? I'd really appreciate if you could run it and let me see the results. Feel free to put the output as a subpage of my user, like he:×שת×ש:ש×××××/botOutput. B.T.W. can the bot recognize and not include links from talk pages, comuunity page ext.? Thank again he:×שת×ש:ש×××××
Your quick... I looked at the output, that's exactly what I'm looking for. As to your question, since I don't even know what the Python Wikipediabot framework even is, i guess the answer's no. But I'm willing to learn and I'm considered a quick study. That is, of course, unless it requires an operator user, wich I'm not. With great respect, ש×××××.
15:31, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- I've downloaded Python, and I am learning to use the framework. Can you send me the script? ש×××××.
16:22, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- The option is on. Thank you! ש×××××
- 05:02, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
A few questions, if you don't mind. I've downloaded python and installed it, that went fine. But I'm having trouble using CVS to download the framework, it seems to stop at a point and not go on. At first I thought it had something to do with the size of the files, so I left it running while I was gone. But 3 hours later it only went on with 2 files. I don't even know if i have all the files.
can you help me here? 11:43, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
ש×××××
- I'm not sure what the problem could be. Did you use the following command to download the framework?
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@pywikipediabot.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/pywikipediabot co pywikipedia
- When I do that, it downloads everything within 1 or 2 minutes, although of course your results will depend on the speed of your Internet connection. --Russ (talk) 12:17, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
- I've downloaded the whole framework from the direct link. I didn't run that command you stated, only used the instructions on Meta. Now that I have the framework, when I run the bot I get the following message: 'file "xmlanalyze.py", line 246 syntaxError: invalid syntax'. I havn't touched the bot files at all. 05:26, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
I've just ran the command, and the same thing happened - it reached Spelling/README and stopped... 06:14, 11 June 2007 (UTC)Files downloaded succesfully. :) 07:00, 11 June 2007 (UTC)- Good. Does that mean that xmlanalyze.py now runs without a syntax error? [If not, which version of Python did you install?] --Russ (talk) 12:16, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
- Still syntax error, using Python25. Does that have any meaning? 13:17, 11 June 2007 (UTC) ש×××××
- In my copy of the file, line 246 is this:
if ns == TEMPLATE \
and page.titleWithoutNamespace() in template_inclusions:
- My best guess is that the backslash character has gotten messed up in copying the file to your machine; try reinserting it, or just combining the two lines into one. --Russ (talk) 13:46, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
Found it! There was a line gap between those two line, and between two other lines. I think it'l work now.13:56, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
- Well... It worked perfectly. 6 minutes for pass 1, and 17 for pass 2. I'd like to make sure that I understand the output data properly. So, as far as I have understood:
- bad redirections - point to themselves.
- Correct (or point to another page that points back to the first one)
- long redirections - contain more than just the redirection
- Correct
- DPL - Disambiguation page links (right?) - the disambiguation pages with links that need fixing.
- Correct. Only pages with at least 50 references (from articles) are listed.
- DPL/Templates - links generated by templates.
- Correct.
- dump statistics - The first table - statistics for the whole wikipedia. the second table - statistics of pages that link to disambig pages.
- Correct.
- bad redirections - point to themselves.
- Am I right? Let me know. And I'd like to ask a few questions, if you don't mind:
- What will happen if i run the bot again on the same dump? What if I run it on a newer dump?
- If you run it again on the same dump, it should produce exactly the same output. If you run it on a newer dump, it will overwrite all the pages listed above, except dump statistics, which will have the new output appended at the end.
- If I change the output text into Hebrew, will it work (UNICODE characters)?
- It should, but I haven't tested it. Before the first line of xmlanalyze.py you'll need to add a line that reads exactly as follows:
- What will happen if i run the bot again on the same dump? What if I run it on a newer dump?
# -*- coding: utf-8 -*-
- I think that's it for now. Thanks! 15:25, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
- ש×××××
- Good luck! --Russ (talk) 15:33, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
Man, you are great. Thank you so much!! I've started changing the English into Hebrew, but the I realized that I might be changing text that is expexted from the server, which will muck up the whole program. So, can I ask for another favor? Will you be willing to translate the text for me? 16:07, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
ש×××××
- Ha, ha - don't ask me to translate anything, unless it is from English into English! You can change any quoted string in xmlanalyze.py, except for file names and regular expressions -- and you should change the ones that refer to specific namespaces like "User:" and "Template:". But unless you want your bot to print "Sh'ma Yisrael" or the Shehecheyanu :) I don't think I'll be able to help you. --Russ (talk) 16:33, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
- I must poin out - you've got a great sense of humor. What I meant was, that i'll give you the exact translations and you will replace the English with the Hebrew. I really don't want to do any harm, not after all the trouble I've been through, trying to make it work. 16:57, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

It was oiginally a vandalism page called "Anthony Smith" or something like that, and I didn't have enough time to find the right template (at the time), so I just changed the title. Sorry for any confusion. Codelyoko193 13:38, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your 'help' with the italia dab page. Still I actually hoped to do that one myself. Whats the point in signing up for a page if other people start doing that one anyway. I was hoping to learn somthing about italy during the process for example. Not that I want to complain much, but a notice on my talk page would have been nice. No hard feelings though. cheers!-Catneven 18:34, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry. I had already started working on the page the day before you signed up for it, and didn't even see your note there until I had finished. I never "sign up" for pages; my philosophy (which seems to be in the minority) is that the project is collaborative and everyone should be encouraged to fix any link. --Russ (talk) 20:55, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
- NP! For me, the project is worth my time because I can grasp some extra information about a certain subject, while doing the job. Nice to see how many different perspectives there are within the project. Thanks for your reply!-Catneven 08:16, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
If it's done then move it. Cheers! extraordinary 08:11, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
Trump Plaza dab status
(copied from Talk:Trump Plaza) The edit summary of this edit says "This is a set index/list of buildings, not a disambig page" and the edit removes the {{disamb}} tag. I replaced the tag because this is a page for buildings known by the name "Trump Plaza" and which readers may search for using the name Trump Plaza. This page helps them disambiguate between the various buildings known by that name. --TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 15:08, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Please helpme with a redirect
I would like to move the article Léon Minkus to Ludwig Minkus.
Could you please help?
--Mrlopez2681 12:39, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, I cannot. Ludwig Minkus has been edited more than once, which means that only an administrator can delete it and then move the other page to that title. Try WP:RM. --Russ (talk) 12:54, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
Would you mind discussing why you moved that? Shakespeare's play is "A Midsummer Night's Dream" not "Midsummer Night's Dream". There is a disambiguation link on top of the page. -- Cat chi? 15:00, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
- Are you serious? Read the Talk page -- the vast majority of users who came to that page did so by mistake. Do you really expect that everyone who is searching for the Shakespeare play is required to know that it starts with the word "A" and include that in their search? --Russ (talk) 15:29, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
- I am always serious when I post such a thing.
- The talk page conversation is most uncivil and even one of the posters was a vandal (which you have reverted). I do not see an adequate discussion to move the page.
- Consider a search for "Midsummer Night's Dream", as you can see the first hit is "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and second one is "Midsummer Night's Dream". If people typo and forget to put an 'A' in front of the title the first line they read will show them their mistake to them.
- And yes I generally expect people to either use the "search" function or know the exact title in what they are looking for.
- -- Cat chi? 16:51, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
- Your comment about search results is applicable only if a user chooses the "search" button instead of the "go" button. Be that as it may, I think the issue should be posted at WP:RM to allow a broader discussion, rather than have you and I go back and forth about what makes more sense. --Russ (talk) 16:54, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, and just to be clear -- when I said "Are you serious?" I didn't mean were you serious about wanting the page at a particular title, but were you serious about not understanding my reason for moving it. --Russ (talk) 21:23, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
Naim Krieziu / Naim Kryeziu
Could you please explain me why you reverted my edit regarding Naim Kryeziu? That article is already present under the name Naim Krieziu, that's why I made Kryeziu's version a redirect of the article with the commonest spelling. There's no need for a carbon copy of an existing article, I hope you agree with me. --Angelo 18:05, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
- Okay, sorry, I just realized I wrongly made it as a senseless self-redirect. I am fixing it. --Angelo 18:06, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

re: length of Beggars and Choosers summary
Hi, I'm the original author of the summary. I have just tried to cut it down for length even more, and possibly even succeeded, but not by much. The novel was very difficult to summarize in the first place (I can't go character-by-character because their storylines are interlinked; it's the same reason the Lord of the Rings films were done with intercutting plotlines), and I don't think I can approach it objectively. As the person who placed the objection, why don't you give it a try? (He said, slightly vengefully, but with a great deal of interest, since he honestly doesn't think he can compact it any further without losing coherence.) ~Marblespire 01:46, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Aimee Allen and Aimée Allen
Aimee Allen and Aimée Allen are 2 different artists. One is from Montana who lives in Los Angeles, CA and sings COOTIES on the Hairspray album. The other is the French one. How do we sort this out? I just edited this morning and someone changed it all up again. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Revolucian (talk • contribs) 19:45, August 2, 2007 (UTC)
- To start with, it would be helpful if there were two separate articles; each one could have a {{otheruses4}} hatnote at the top, linking to the other one, to prevent confusion between them. (For example,
{{otheruses4|the American singer|the French singer|Aimée Allen}}
.) You could create an article for the American singer by clicking on the red link. It would also be helpful to cite sources. --Russ (talk) 20:09, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, after looking at the "French" Aimee Allen's website, it appears that she does not use an accent in her name, and probably is not French -- it says she went to Yale University, then moved to Paris after graduation. So perhaps we need articles Aimee Allen (jazz singer) and Aimee Allen (pop singer) instead. --Russ (talk) 20:16, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

British
RussBot's been busy changing the links in edits I've made, where I've linked the word 'British' to the article of the same name, to a link to the article 'United Kingdom'. I'm curious to know the rationale behind this (?). Alchemagenta 14:21, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for asking. British is a disambiguation page. If you look at the guidelines that I've linked to, you'll see that linking to disambiguation pages is discouraged; since the title of such a page is (by definition) ambiguous, it is preferable to link to a more specific article that unambiguously identifies the topic of interest. --Russ (talk) 14:32, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
- Ah-ha... never got as far as scrolling to the bottom of the British page to see the disambiguation notice. Thanks, Russ. Alchemagenta 22:39, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
I, too, didn't notice that British was a disambiguation page. However, as my link on Michael Gerzon was about citizenship, I changed your change from United Kingdom to British Islands. The latter discusses passports, which seems appropriate. If you disagree then change it back. HairyWombat 18:52, 13 August 2007 (UTC) (Manx by birth.)
- I don't claim to be an expert in British citizenship law; in fact, I'm about as far as possible from being one. I wasn't aware that there is a concept of "citizen of the British Islands", though. --Russ (talk) 20:12, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

remove text following redirect using AWB
Hi R'n'B. I notice that you've made a bunch of edits with the summary "remove text following redirect using AWB". I know that there are a lot of reasons that removing text below a redirect is important, but there is one big reason not to: most of the time, those pages arise as the result of a cut-and-paste moves. Cut-and-paste moves are very bad because they make it difficult or impossible to keep track of who contributed to the article, and thus may violate the terms of the GFDL. When you make those AWB edits, you obscure the evidence of the move and we lose our best chance of repairing them.
You can help. If no edits have been made to the copied version, you can undo the move yourself: just redirect the pasted version back to the original, remove the redirect from the original version, and leave descriptive edit summaries for both steps. If the pasted version has been edited, you can't fix it yourself, but can simply list it at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen for an administrator to handle by merging the page histories. Thanks for you help. Let me know if you have any questions. ×Meegs 19:20, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- Also a question: is that a built-in AWB function, or something that you programmed yourself? If the former, I wonder if maybe it should be removed. Thanks again. ×Meegs 19:23, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- No, it's something I did myself. I see the concern. It's hard for me to tell whether a long redirect is the result of a cut and paste move or a legitimate merge, or something else. I'll see what I can do to avoid this problem. Russ (talk) 00:46, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, Russ. Here's what you do: look at the first edit of the redirect target; if it's the same as the redirect's second to last edit, it's a straight paste and needs reversing. Also, remember that even for merges that require cutting and pasting, the GFDL requires some record or link to a record of the content's earlier contributors. The standard way to satisfy this is to link to the source article in the paste's edit summary. When I find an unattributed merge, I usually make a trivial edit (null edits get thrown out), note the source article and date of the paste edit, and then speak to the perpetrator. Others sometimes leave a link on the talk page, or even post the entire list previous contributors. Anyway, back to true paste moves; if you do do another of those AWB runs down the road, maybe you can at least just drop a list on the repair pen's talk page so others to analyze. Take care ×Meegs 01:21, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Dab template removal
Hello. Is there a particular reason you removed the {{R to disambiguation page}} tag from the redirect at Fulton, NY? --Kralizec! (talk) 21:48, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
- Yes. If you read the text on {{R to disambiguation page}}, and on the category page it refers to, you will see that this template is meant for pages with titles like Foo (disambiguation), which are to be used for "links that should always point to the disambiguation page, rather than be disambiguated." Links to Fulton, NY are most likely intended to refer to one of the specific places by that name, and should be disambiguated. If there is a need to refer to the disambiguation page, then a redirect entitled Fulton, New York (disambiguation) can be created. --Russ (talk) 22:07, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
- Perhaps I am misunderstanding you, but Fulton, New York is a disambiguation page, so I do not see how the redirect at Fulton, NY could ever be disambiguated. Most of the rest of the city/state redirects are tagged {{Redir from US postal ab}}, but since this page's target is itself a dab page, this redirect tag did not appear to be the most appropriate choice. --Kralizec! (talk) 22:21, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
- Granted, the template language (not to mention its title) is not very clear. Even though Fulton, NY is a redirect to a disambiguation page, the template is not intended for use on all redirects to disambiguation pages. It is only intended to be used on a redirect that is created for the purpose of allowing other pages to link intentionally to the disambiguation page -- in other words, it is a signal that the link is intentional, and should not be disambiguated by other editors. Almost always, this means that the template should only be used on a redirect that has the word "(disambiguation)" in the title. --Russ (talk) 13:36, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
- In that case I fear you are going to have your hands full fixing these, as the instructions at WP:R do not make this nuanced distinction clear at all. Please allow me to apologize in advance, as I -no doubt like many others- have used the {{R to disambiguation page}} tag on every redirect I have ever created that pointed to a dab page. --Kralizec! (talk) 17:02, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
Typo redirect Talk:Courtois's Laughingthrush
Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Talk:Courtois's Laughingthrush , by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Talk:Courtois's Laughingthrush is a redirect page resulting from an implausible typo (CSD R3).
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Talk:Courtois's Laughingthrush , please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. Category Epicrates
Hi R'n'B! I saw that you decided to resurrect the category for Epicrates, which had been created automatically by Polbot. Any particular reason? I don't think there's a need for this, since the entire Boinae subfamily contains less than 70 taxa by my count, including the five genera it comprises. IMO, a single category will do just fine for the lot, so there's no need to create separate subcategories for the individual genera. --Jwinius 20:08, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
- Hi. The way the Category page was left, it was essentially broken (it contained a redirect back into the article namespace, and if any pages were ever added to the category, they would have remained invisible). I did tag for speedy deletion some other "genera" categories where there was only one species in the genus, since there didn't seem to be any possibility that any pages would ever go there. For this one, it was unclear and I decided to err on the side of caution. If you think that there's no need for the category, then I encourage you to tag it with {{db-catempty}}; or put in
{{category redirect|Boinae}}
, whichever you think is more appropriate. --Russ (talk) 20:55, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
- The redirect was my fault; sorry! After Polbot had created so many useless snake categories, I didn't know of anything better to do. At least I learned something this time. Thanks for the advice! I'll take care of it. Cheers! --Jwinius 21:12, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
Categorized redirects - Prohibition in Finland
I have been adding categories to redirects. For example the redirect Prohibition in Finland, now redirecting to Prohibition of alcohol##Nordic countries was included in categories History of Finland, Finnish society, 1932 in Finland and Prohibition by country. I was also marked with the template {{R with possibilities}}.
On 8 August 2007 Prohibition was moved to Prohibition of alcohol.
On 10 August 2007 your bot "fixed a double-redirect" moving the the redirect to Prohibition (disambiguation)#Nordic_countries. It also deleted all the categories and the template.
You propabliy can figure out why this is wrong. -- Petri Krohn 16:33, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
P.S. The original mess was caused by User:N-edits, but your bot escalated the problem. The correct action would have been simply to revert his incomplete page move.
As a general rule redirects should follow the page move, not be redirected to a newly created page. Your bot fixed the double redirect problem but caused hundreds of articles to link to the wrong place. I have now fixed the 20 redirects. -- Petri Krohn 17:03, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
- You're quite right; this shouldn't have happened. My bot is designed so that if there is anything on the redirect page other than the actual redirect link, including categories or templates, it requires manual review before making any edits. And as a matter of policy I would never intentionally remove a {{R with possibilities}} template. This edit was either human error or a bug in my bot; I'll have to investigate a little further to decide which, since it happened three weeks ago. --Russ (talk) 18:31, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

3rd US Infantry article
The article should be pointed to 3rd US Infantry only. The redirection to 3rd Infantry (United States) is an inaccurate redirection and was moved without consulting the forum in the first place (this has happened a few times over the past couple years, as the regiment name is a different format than others, and therefore is not actually misnamed according to Wiki standards for military articles). Please fix this if you can. Thank you. Ryecatcher773 00:50, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
New York, Westchester and Boston
I don't know what you intended, but you have completely reversed my efforts to have NYW&B be the surviving title and eliminate various unnecessary redirects. Please explain. DCDuring 17:30, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- I intended exactly what I said in my edit summary. There never was any person, place, or thing called "New York, Westchester and Boston." There was a "New York, Westchester and Boston Railway," as the text of the article itself says That should be the title of the article. --Russ (talk) 19:17, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- There never was a "New York, Westchester and Boston Railway", either.
It could have been either
- "New York, Westchester and Boston Railway Company" or
- "New York, Westchester & Boston Railway Compamy".
Neither of them should be confused with the "New York, Westchester & Boston Railroad Company" (or is that "New York, Westchester and Boston Railroad Company" or some other variant?). I am open to the possiblity that you might be right, of course. What is your citation?
- Also, could you direct me to a citation on naming in the WP:MOS that supports your position, whatever it may be. If you would like to do some substantive work on the article, please let me know. DCDuring 19:33, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- My source is An Account of the Franchise history of This New Single-Phase Suburban Railway, of the Territory Which It Serves, of Its Relation to Previously Established Transit Lines, of the Character of Train Service Which It Gives and of the Method of Fare Collection, Electric Railway Journal, Vol. XXXIX, No. 21, May 25, 1912. This contemporaneous account refers to the line (as opposed to the company operating it) as the "New York, Westchester & Boston Railway". If you want to move the article to that title, you'll get no objection from me.
- Looking at my copy (in Arcara (1985)), I note the "&" instead of "and". The cover of Arcara (which looks like it's taken from a bond of the company) includes "Company". I don't think it really pays to distinguish between the company and the physical railroad. After all, it's not Coca-Cola. DCDuring 20:17, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- As for Wikipedia standards, I think the most relevant page is Wikipedia:Naming conventions (companies). Also, please bear in mind that redirects from incorrect titles are encouraged, to help readers find the correct article easily.
- I am thinking of adding a couple of redirects (NYW&B, for example), partially for my own benefit (but you can share). I'm guessing that most visits would be from internal links. I've converted mentions in the New Haven article and various NYC subway articles, Heathcote Bypass, and an article on "The Westchester", referring to the mall. I have inserted a link into New Rochelle, New York. What are the limits for this kind of insertion? DCDuring 20:17, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- As for Wikipedia standards, I think the most relevant page is Wikipedia:Naming conventions (companies). Also, please bear in mind that redirects from incorrect titles are encouraged, to help readers find the correct article easily.
- Thank you for your invitation to contribute to the article. I grew up in White Plains and am very familiar with that section of the right-of-way, so maybe I will take you up on it. --Russ (talk) 19:52, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- Since you must have one Arcara's "books", you are in a good position to take a section and write it up. Are the section heads I have OK? Which ones would you like?
- One thing I'm trying to clear up is what happened to the NYW&B RAILROAD Company (the RR) between 1873 and 1906. In the article I assert that Morgan et al. bought the RR in 1906, but Arcara (no investment banker) is very unclear about that. I hope Bangs is better in that particular area. I also wonder what the markup was between the money paid for real estate by the RR and the $11 million paid by the Morgan interests. I also wonder about the mark-up between the $11 million and what the New Haven paid for the NYW&BRwy. DCDuring 20:17, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- I finally made the article name change that you correctly said was the way it ought to be. The article is fit to be edited now. Thanks. DCDuring 07:38, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
