Hey, just dropping you a note that X-pert Dreamer did make some edits to Wikipedia, but they were deleted because at this point the article didn't really expand on the pre-existing article for LGBT hip hop. I've left a note on their talk page about this and about userspace copies. I would probably recommend that they begin their articles or contributions in the draftspace/userspace (WP:DRAFT, WP:USERSPACE) since that would give them more time to work on things and polish them up, as mainspace additions can be deleted or reverted. I've restored it and moved it to User:X-pert Dreamer/Queerness in Hip-Hop culture so they can work on it, so that's probably the article edits they were talking about. Gender and Sexuality in Hip Hop Culture

Hi JustJess PhD. I was thrilled to see your class page for Gender and Sexuality in Hip Hop Culture. It looks like you're tackling important topics but are running into problems with notability on some of the articles. I've removed the proposal to delete the article Awkwafina Yellow Ranger and moved it to Yellow Ranger (album). I also proposed that we merge Hip-Hop Video Vixens into Hip hop model because I think it concerns the same topic. Hip-Hop in academia, Ride or die chick, and Sonya Renee Taylor should probably be okay, but The Mami in Rap Music could use some work. I couldn't tell what other articles are being worked on. @GeneralizationsAreBad: My students @Janey3597, Canarycage, Bpulver, and Celestejean96: presented the page yesterday and as a course we discussed the changes that need to happen so it doesn't get deleted. Change in your user rights

Your Wikipedia account was previously granted a user right called "course instructor" by the Wiki Education Foundation. That right enabled you to create a course page through the EducationProgram MediaWiki extension. Starting in fall 2015, the Wiki Education Foundation has discontinued its use of this extension. Going forward, users should create course pages through the Wiki Education Foundation website. That application is more user-friendly, and any content is automatically mirrored to Wikipedia. To prevent confusion, we'll be removing your "course instructor" user right, as it is not needed with the new system. This is simply a notification of the technical change to your account. Some feedback

Hi Jessica (and Adam). I've noticed recently that there seem to be a lot of articles on Wikipedia that are basically about the topic of sexism in hip-hop culture (and responses to it):

• Hip hop feminism
• Feminist activism in hip hop
• Misogyny in hip hop culture
• Representation of black women in hip hop

All of these articles originate from your course and all but one of them have either been nominated for deletion or merging. While I'm sure some of that negative response is due to the biases of Wikipedia editors, there are also some legitimate concerns being raised about these articles. One of those concerns is that many of these articles cover roughly the same scope or significantly overlap in scope. Wikipedia strives to have one comprehensive article on each topic rather than overlapping articles covering the same ground. Rather than encouraging your students to always create new articles, it may be more productive to have them find existing articles on topics that are relevant to your course and improve those articles. This is actually a more challenging endeavor (and more difficult to evaluate), but will result in better content for Wikipedia and hopefully less of your students' work being deleted in the long run. Another issue is that many of these articles are written in a style closer to a personal essay or academic essay than an encyclopedia article. In order for an article to have an encyclopedic style, it's important to include a good dose of historical context and avoid recentism. It's also important to never express personal opinions, but instead, reflect the opinions of reliable sources in a way that is neutral and dispassionate (even if the sources used are not). I'm sure you already know all of that, but it's important to emphasize these points to your students. My last piece of advice would be to encourage your students to collaborate with Wikipedia:WikiProject Feminism. The editors there would be happy to give advice on articles that need improvement, best practices for writing articles, how to avoid getting articles nominated for deletion, etc. They would also be glad to help refine your students' ideas and proofread their articles. Anyway, I hope none of this advice seems discouraging or condescending. I'm really excited to see this course contributing to Wikipedia and I want to help it succeed! I am not as eloquent as Kaldari above, but I thought I should mention that the article Wildflower (rapper) could use some improvements (YouTube). Bellatrix does not have an article yet, even though she is awesome (YouTube). The article about Hurricane G can also be improved (YouTube1 & YouTube2). More interesting names: Macy Gray (YouTube), Bahamadia, Roxanne Shanté, Ms. Melodie, Heather B., MC Lyte, Paula Perry, Nikki D, Yo-Yo, Baby Love of the Rock Steady Crew & Sparky D (who is mentioned in the article Roxanne Wars but does not have her own article yet). The articles Representation of black women in hip hop and Female Masculinity in Hip Hop have been deleted. I have also nominated Wikipedia:Outing in Hip Hop and Latina stereotypes in hip hop. Some interesting contributions there from the students on your Fall semester, Jess. Especially the work on Mimi Thi Nguyen stood out for me. The Karen Finley edits certainly also added great value, although the last two paragraphs perhaps read a bit too much like an essay. Great work! (on a side note, I had to revert one of your students here, as it was a mis-reading of the article - I left an explanation on their Talk page, hope you don't mind!) @Karst: thank you...I appreciate your words and feedback as it is a difficult assignment for students who don't feel confident in putting information on a public forum. Also quite a few terrible contributions. It's a shame that you don't seem to care about Wikipedia and the quality of the contributions your students make. Other volunteers and myself were forced to clean up after you. I hope you will not do another version of this class next year, because last year the results were far below par, but if you do then I insist that you make a few changes:

• Clean up your own mess. You've caused it, you are responsible. It is unfair to put volunteers in the position where they have to clean up after you like you did last time.
• Learn about Wikipedia. You clearly do not have the skills required to do this properly. Why don't you ask someone who is an experienced Wikipedia user to help you? Why do you not accept help when an experienced Wikipedian offers it to you?
• Communicate better. Kaldari and myself offered you help. Kaldari wrote 2384 characters. I added another 1544 characters. Your response is a oneliner, barely over 200 characters. Why are you so rude?

Are you going to make these changes? Are you going to apologize to the people who've cleaned up your mess? Are you going to help clean up the remaining mess? Do you understand that you are the person who sets these students up for failure, by not explaining how Wikipedia works (you cannot, because you don't know) and asking them to do things that will get reverted/deleted? I think I know the answer. I think you are going to respond like this editsummary again. I would like to get a detailed response to these comments, and I would like you to explain how you are going to clean up the remaining mess before you start a new course, and what changes you've made to ensure that the next course will be a success, unlike the last one. It may be a good idea to read my userpage before responding to me. I am not your enemy; I am trying to help you (and your students, and Wikipedia) by being honest with you. I would describe myself as a feminist, my sister has written a book on gender studies and I always send her emails about unnecessarily gendered products and stuff like this and my father cannot work due to a chronic auto-immume disease so when I came back from school he was at home with a cup of tea while my mother shattered the glass ceiling. I love Stephen Fry and I collect his work. I've always voted for female politicians, with one exception (but that was to annoy an Islamophobic politician). I've been listening to hiphop for over 25 years now. I do not live in the USA; I live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The equivalent of your IRS is our Belastingdienst. I give them the tools WIkiedu gives me: training, guidance, guidelines. I can not them go into each and every page and "fix" their work. Maybe I misunderstand your responsibilities/capacities. To be honest it is totally possible that you are doing the best you can in the situation you are in, and that WikiEdu is to blame for not providing you with enough help. But even if I give you the benefit of the doubt as much as possible you've still made quite a few mistakes and bad decisions that you cannot blame on others. The bottom line is that you shouldn't start another course until these problems have been fixed and you understand how to avoid them next time. Explaining everything costs me too much time, so you need help from an experienced Wikipedian.

Kaldari offered to help you. Kaldari registered their Wikipedia account in April 2004, roughly 12 years ago. Please allow Kaldari to help you. Kaldari is far politer than I am (Dutch people are way too honest to be considered polite) and (probably) a native speaker. If you do not like Kaldari for whatever reason then I can easily find another dozen or so experienced Wikipedians who are willing to help you and your students. This is a big community. Obviously you're invested and have some time on your hands...so in all this time instead of aggressively coming after me and being destructive (because why on earth would anyone take the risk of sharing knowledge in an online Wikipedia knowing this could happen to them) you could've done something constructive with the articles by tagging them as part of a course or as stubs or whatever designation you see ft in your righteous indignation. I discovered another course that wasn't mentioned on your userpage (spring 2015). Because of your rudeness and unwillingness to communicate and accept help I have cleaned up most of the remaining mess that the first two (spring 2015 and spring 2016) courses created for you. I don't think you realize that the vast majority of the work done during those courses was ultimately pointless because of those same reasons. I don't expect you to thank me for cleaning up part of the mess you created, but if you would understand the situation then you would thank me. If people like Kaldari and Keegan, who both have well over a decade of experience on Wikipedia, would offer to help me then I would appreciate that. I do not understand why you treat them so rudely.

Quite a few Wikipedians have politely offered to help you and they've been ignored and/or accused of sexism and harassment. Now I am bluntly pointing out the elephant in the room: your rudeness and unwillingness to communicate and accept help is the reason that you are not WP:COMPETENT. Some questions for Ian

@Ian (Wiki Ed): Hi! Where can I find the information that was given to the instructors of these courses? I assume I can edit it, is that correct? Who is responsible for instructing the instructors? You are described as the "Wikipedia Content Expert", that made me laugh out loud, what does that even mean? Do you have more than those two accounts? If not, then I call BS. Has someone explained WP:GNG to JustJess PhD before the course started? And has someone explained that we do not want articles that cover roughly the same scope or significantly overlap in scope (and how difficult it is to fix that problem) before the course started? Did someone explain WP:BLP to JustJess PhD before the course started? Whose responsibility is it to evaluate the results of previous courses, and give feedback where necessary? Why doesn't the WMF, an organization that wastes millions of dollars that were earned by volunteers, help JustJess PhD and others in a similar situation? Before responding, please take 10 minutes to check the results of the first course, otherwise you'll think I am overly dramatic and/or an asshole. This is bad.
